To my surprise I had found out about a year ago that the Fire/Rescue station at the former Meigs Field Airstrip is still standing. I had incorrectly assumed that the Daley administration was tearing it down along with the airstrip. Since the fire station is still standing, I would rebuild a heliport next to the fire station and relocate the Air/Sea rescue headquarters back to “Northerly Island”. The city could save much needed money by keeping the helicopters at Meigs Field, as Grant Park/Burnham Harbor is a much more central location than 9500 south on the lakefront, and the helicopters can respond even more quickly to waterfront incidents and highrise fires both on the north and the south sides of Chicago.

CHRIS: Engine Co. 21 was reorganized as Meigs Field Co. in October 1967 when Dry Chemical 1 (6-2-1 – 1966 IHC Fire Boss D-331) and Chemical 4 (6-3-4 – 1967 GMC/Seagrave/Timco D-330) replaced Engine 21.
The former Engine 21 (1956 Mack D-302) subsequently ran as Engine 119 (10/67 – 4/68), Engine 33 (5/68 – 8/69), Engine 91 (8/69 – 1/70), Engine 32 (7/71 – 2/74). and Engine 85 (5/74 – 10/75).

Chris, Engine 21 had been assigned to Meigs Field however they were taken out of service on October 17th ,1967, which was the day that Dry Chemical 1 (which was identified as 621) went in service. At the time the fire station being used was a “service building garage”. The Meigs field Fire/Rescue station in the photos was opened on September 27th 1973 about 6 years after Engine 21 was taken out of service. Some people and documents might have still identified Meigs Field as Engine 21’s quarters but in reality they were “long gone”.

A few years ago 6-3-6 was being used as a stationary pump at the O’Hare ARFF training site to refill crash trucks. It has since been replaced. At the time it had no brakes so the drive shaft had been removed to prevent its movement.
