Gordon J. Nord, Jr. took advantage of Saturday’s nice weather to get photos of the new Crimson aerial for Truck 31 (shop #E338) and the new Oshkosh Striker for 6-5-1 at Midway Airport.
The new Striker 3000 is replacing this 2000 TI-3000 unit that was also equipped with a Snozzle.

This is a link to the 2011 City Purchasing Plan. The Snorkel Squads should be on page 6 after scrolling down. You have look carefully as things are “line item” and are in relatively small print. Here is the link. As I don’t know if the link will work on this website I am also sending the report to this site’s webmaster so he could run it on the site.

Campbell H, what is the city purchasing website? And yes that would be cool for new squad companies, but I highly doubt the city will not have Snorkels because it’s history and they are easy accessible in tight places for firefighting.

Chris you are correct about one of the 1988 Ford/Pirsch trucks which had the aerial ladder removed and was used as a spare squad for several years. It was Truck 41’s former rig that was converted to a spare squad.
The four 1988 Ford/Pirsch trucks have an interesting history. All four of them were using 1966 factory reconditioned 100-foot aerial ladders that were originally installed on four 1966 Mack mid-mount truck companies which had large rear “overhangs”. Five Mack mid-mounts and two Seagrave mid-mounts were purchased in 1966/67, however they were the last mid-mounted aerial ladder trucks that Chicago had purchased, and they were also probably the first (at least in the late 20th Century) that the CFD had purchased.

Campbell, Snorkel no longer produces new aerial devices, so if the Snorkel part of the squads are to be new, the current booms would have to be remounted on new apparatus.

Cool, thanks for the info, guys. I hope they do get the new squads…..any idea if it will just be the boxes or if they’ll get new Snorkels, too?

im just wondering, how many chevy tahoes are in CFD service?

Campbell H. The spare squad that was formerly Engine 23 will apparently carry some of the squad equipment, and the rest of the squad gear will be carried on the Snorkel as is currently done. According to the city purchasing department website, the CFD might be looking to purchase up to 2 new squads for this year. This isn’t the first time that the CFD has run with former engines as spare squads. Several spare engines were converted to spare squads during the 1990s, and because the Snorkel Squads were running “top heavy”, the former engines began running as second pieces to the Snorkel Squads until the current 2-piece Snorkel Squads were purchased and put in service during 2000.

Can anyone tell me who is this sixth new crimson aerial ladder going to?

So is that old e-23 going to run as a spare squad? Or how is that going to work? There’s not nearly as much as one of the normal squads?

Yeah they did and it is going to be a reserve squad and the old engine 60 is the new E-109

Out of curiousity, how often does that happen where any fire apparatus that is brand new is sent back for issues?

Last fall O’Hare Field had 3 new Strikers delivered for 653, 655, and 656, however I had heard that they had been sent back to Oshkosh for further work. I was wondering if they are back at O’Hare Field and if they are in service yet?
