The Wheeling Fire Department formally dedicated their new headquarters Station 24 on Saturday. They held a brief ceremony with a formal ribbon cutting performed by the village president and Esther Koeppen. Esther’s late husband was Bernhardt Koeppen who was the first full-time fire chief for the Wheeling Fire Department in 1969. The event was attended by many community members, local politicians and family members of fire department personnel. Also among the attendees was the Koeppen family which includes Arlington Heights Deputy Chief Kenneth Koeppen.

The Wheeling Fire Department will be formally dedicating their new headquarters Station 24 tomorrow (Saturday, October 2, 2010) .
As of 6PM today, August 14, 2010, the Wheeling Fire Department is occupying their new headquarters fire station #24 at 499 S. Milwaukee Avenue. The old station #24 at what was the public safety complex, 255 W. Dundee Road, will not house any fire apparatus or firefighters for the near future. This facility will be remodeled so that the fire department can have a small presence within what will be the new expanded police headquarters. Eventually a single company will run out of the 255 W. Dundee Road location to maintain an optimum response to the northwest portion of their district.
We have been following the progress of two new fire stations in Division 1. Mount Prospect Station 14 on Kensington Road opened several months ago but was not complete until recently when the bay doors were installed. Mount Prospect officials had refused to accept the bi-fold doors with windows on at least two occasions due to a substandard paint job. The building opened with solid doors as mentioned HERE and HERE. Today the station was photographed with the proper doors. As a side note, it appears that a reserve ambulance and a reserve engine are housed at this station which will require an update to the site listing.
The second fire station that we’ve been keeping tabs on is the new headquarters Station 24 on Milwaukee Avenue in Wheeling. Running about a month behind schedule, the majority of this project has been completed. The station has company quarters including kitchen, dayroom, bunk room and lockers on the first floor while the headquarters space and training room are on the second floor.
The new station in Wheeling on Milwaukee Avenue is coming along with a projected opening in July. The new Station 14 in Mount Prospect still has not received the permanent doors with glass for the front of the apparatus bays.
The Village of Wheeling and the Mutual Aid Box Alarm System (MABAS) recently signed a lease agreement for the property at 175-233 W. Hintz Road in Wheeling. This property which formerly housed the Wheeling Public Works Department will be the new home of MABAS for the next 33 months with an option to extend the lease for an additional 36 months. MABAS will move their offices to this location and will use the facility to store a large amount of their physical resources including MABAS and Illinois Task Force One (IL-TF1) vehicles and trailers. Most of the mobile assets which have been stored to date at the Northeastern Illinois Public Safety Training Academy (NIPSTA) in Glenview have already been relocated to the Wheeling facility.
Work is progressing on the construction of the new fire stations in Wheeling and Mount Prospect as illustrated in the recent photos of both projects.
Here is a delayed post showing the progress on Wheeling’s new Station 24 on Milwaukee Avenue. The new station which will become the fire department headquarters is due to open this spring. Originally, plans called for two new stations which would give Wheeling a total of three. This would have allowed them to vacate their current location at 255 W. Dundee Road (Station 24) which also houses fire administration. This facility used to combine the village hall in addition to the police department. The new village hall was completed last year and renovation for the updated and expanded police department has been underway. Budget constraints have halted plans for the third fire station that would have provided coverage to the northwest portions of Wheeling. Subsequently, the fire department will not be able to completely vacate the station on Dundee Road and will have to maintain a company there.
Here is an updated photo showing the progress of Wheeling (Division 1) Fire Station 24 being built on Milwaukee Avenue. The last construction photo was posted here.
Here is a recent photo of Station 14 for Mount Prospect (Division 1) which is being built next to the current station #14 on Kensington Road. The previous update was posted here.
Wheeling is in the process of building a new headquarters station 24 on Milwaukee Avenue between Dundee Road and Hintz Road. The police department is anticipating expanding into the entire facility at 255 W. Dundee Road that formerly housed the village hall in addition to police and fire. The village offices moved out earlier this year into a new facility. It is unclear when the fire department will be able to totally vacate the space though due to longer anticipated response times to the north west portion of their district. A projected third station to cover that area has not yet been settled on.
