Fatal fire in Rockford, 4-19-19

Excerpts from mystateline.com:

The Winnebago County Coroner says a 56-year-old woman was killed in a fire Friday morning in the 800 block of 18th Street, not far from Churchill Park and Keith Creek just before 3 a.m.

Rockford fire officials say after arriving, they could see smoke and flames coming from the outside. Five minutes after arriving, they went inside, where they found the victim. She was taken to the hospital, where she later died. Three dogs also died in the blaze.

Rockford Fire Chief Derek Bergsten says there’s an easy way to prevent these kinds of tragedies. “One thing we would like to emphasize is make sure you have working smoke alarms. That’s imperative so that you can get early notification that you do have a fire in your house so you can exit in a safe manner. This is our second fire fatality this week and we want to make sure everyone has working smoke alarms.”

Bergsten says the fire only took 30 minutes to extinguish, and that the cause is still under investigation.

Rockford Fire Department news

Excerpts from mystateline.com:

Ryan Curry is an Iraq veteran who does charity work through his group “Beneath the Beard,” which was formed to help military veterans with PTSD.

On Tuesday, some of Curry’s colleagues from the Rockford firefighter’s union invited him out to Old Chicago for lunch. “I was getting a hold of some other people with the fundraising things we were doing, and a police officer came in and said someone had hit my car,” said a surprised Curry. What started as a white lie ended with a wounded Marine vet receiving a much needed pickup truck.

The Rockford Firefighters Local 413 raises money each year to purchase cars for wounded vets, and Curry was this year’s winner.

“I got wounded in Iraq in 2006, August 30th,” Curry said. “I hit and IED and I hit a lot of them. So, that was my 7th concussion within 30 days, so I had some damage to my frontal lobe. The final time I hit, I put some shrapnel in my body, and severed by ear drums.”

Curry’s mission didn’t end in Iraq. He learned that, in order to help himself, he had to help others. “I felt that this natural, little part of us that helps us, mentally helping somebody else, and that kind of catches on, and that’s where it has kind of gone from,” he said.

Curry’s work with the department involves charity work, collecting donations and delivering them to the people who need them. Over the past few months, firefighters noticed that he was making multiple pick-up runs in his old car. “We raised close to 80 turkeys, and I delivered them to all the veterans in hospice care and people who are in need,” Curry said. “It takes a lot of trips in my old vehicle, so I can load the back of [the new pickup truck] with Christmas gifts.”

“It was important for us to touch base with Ryan and acknowledge his service, and the sacrifice he made,” Firefighter Christopher Scol said. “And not just the sacrifice he made, but when he got back from being deployed [in the military] and dealt with his personal issues and injuries, he continues to serve the community in a capacity that’s just inspiring.”

Rockford Fire Department news

Excerpts from rrstar.com:

Aldermen on Monday agreed to buy the Rockford Fire Department three new quints for $3.2 million under terms of a 4.2 percent loan. The loan will cost the city $479,529 a year for eight years.

The vehicles are expected to provide front-line response to fires, rescues, and medical emergencies for about seven years before moving to a reserve truck capacity, Rockford Fire Chief Derek Bergsten said.

“We got rid of the typical ladder trucks four years ago,” Bergsten said. “Now they’re multipurpose so they can go to any emergency.”

thanks Dennis

Rockford Fire Department news

Excerpts from mystateline.com:

Rockford firefighters attempted to make one neighborhood feel a little safer as they went door to door to install smoke alarms and conduct home safety surveys.

The Rockford Fire Department undertook the initiative in the neighborhood of Winnebago and Maple Streets, in response to a deadly fire last week that claimed the life of a 1-year-old child.

The Rockford Fire Department routinely does similar visits to neighborhoods throughout the city in the aftermath of significant fires.

Rockford Fire Department news

Excerpts from rrstar.com:

A lawsuit filed one year to the day after a June 25, 2017 fire destroyed the historic Hanley Furniture building claims the city refused to allow owners of an adjacent building to access their property, allowing 3 feet of rainwater to pool on the roof and damage the structure.

Rockford Mutual Insurance Co. — which insured the building on behalf of Sam and Linda Pirrello, owners of 307 S. Main St. — filed the lawsuit at the Winnebago County Courthouse. The lawsuit seeks damages of more than $464,472 — the amount the insurance company paid to the Pirrellos.

Mayor Tom McNamara said the city acted exactly as it should have and praised the coordinated response by Rockford firefighters, public works crews, and the water division. Because of concern about the Hanley Building’s structural integrity, the city didn’t allow any work to proceed at the adjacent building, but the fire department did allow tenants and owners the chance to enter the building briefly to assess damage and retrieve small items.

“We did everything we could to make sure everyone was safe, and we tried to mitigate the damage to that building as much as we could,” McNamara said. “Not one person got injured in one of the largest fires our city has seen in 30 years outside that Asher Tool fire.”

Excerpts from wrex.com:

A veteran in the stateline is a proud winner of a 2018 Ford F-150. Rockford Firefighters Local 413 raises money so it can buy cars for wounded vets and this year’s lucky recipient is Ryan Curry.

Ryan was injured in Iraq in 2006 when his unit hit an I.E.D and was ambushed. He started a group for veterans with PTSD called “Beneath the Beard” and dedicates his time giving back to the community. He says that this new car will help him reach more people in the area.

Rockford Firefighters Local 413 are hosting a special game at the Rockford Rivets Stadium this Friday night and will sell special jerseys for Wheels 4 Warriors.
