A Marengo home explosion destroyed a neighboring home, left eight to 10 more houses uninhabitable and sent two people to the hospital around 5 a.m. Sunday.
Marengo Fire Chief Bob Bradbury said at least 30 additional homes in the neighborhood were affected by debris. A damage estimate isn’t yet available.
The owners of the home where the explosion initiated weren’t home at the time of the incident, but there were animals inside. The cause of the explosion is under investigation. Foul play isn’t suspected at this time.

A house explosion damaged dozens of homes in Marengo early Sunday morning at about 5 a.m. in the 500-block of 7th Ave. At least two homes were destroyed when firefighters got to the scene, Marengo’s fire chief said.
Four people were rescued from the second floor of a house next door. Two people were hospitalized with minor injuries.
A total of four homes were damaged by the fire and more than 50 other homes sustained damage from the explosion. The Marengo fire chief said homes two blocks away from the explosion were damaged and several homes were rocked from their foundations.
