New in-house alert system for Crystal Lake

Excerpts from the DailyHerald.com:

The Crystal Lake City Council unanimously approved buying a new firehouse alert system for all three of the city’s stations …

The new alert system has been something the Crystal Lake Foreign Fire Insurance Tax Board … has been working on for two years, Fire Rescue Chief Paul DeRaedt said.

The system … may reduce the department’s response times by getting the firefighters out the door quicker. Information about the [call] will come in as the dispatcher is taking the call, appearing on a screen and notifying the firefighters that they should start to head for their vehicles.

In the future, the alerts also may be limited to [the] one station that needs to respond instead of all three, as is currently the case…

Low bidder APS Firehouse Alerting of Westminister, Maryland, was awarded the contract at just less than $130,000, according to city documents.

Prescribed burn causes damage to Crystal Lake homes

Excerpts from the ChicagoTribune.com:

The Crystal Lake Fire Rescue Department reported that 11 residences along Wheatland Drive sustained melted siding due to … radiant heat from a [prescribed burn] for land management purposes. Prescribed fires are often set in prairies, wetlands and other natural areas to burn off invasive plants and allow ecological regeneration.

Deputy Fire Chief Chris Olsen confirmed that the company that conducted the burn was McGinty Bros. Inc., based in Long Grove, and that the company had been contracted by the homeowners association of the Harvest Run subdivision, where the damaged homes are located.

Olsen said McGinty had the proper permits issued by the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency to do the work [and that] … it is common this time of year to see prescribed burns. Rarely do they get out of control and require assistance from the fire department to put out, he said. The fire department said it prevented further damage to nearby homes while putting out the fire. No injuries were reported.

[local resident] Rick Dowell, said he watched the fire being started in the wetlands near his property at about noon. After a short while, however, he said the flames shot higher than his barn and the workers in the wetlands appeared to become flustered. “I saw the workers running to put it out, they seemed a little panicked.

New fire chief in Crystal Lake

The Northwest Herald has an article about a new fire chief in Crystal Lake and ratification of anew contract for firefighters:

Crystal Lake city officials ratified a new four-year collective bargaining agreement with the city’s fire department on the same day it officially swore in a new chief.

Moments after longtime Crystal Lake firefighter Paul DeRaedt was sworn in Tuesday as the new chief, the city council approved a four-year deal with the department that includes a roughly 7 percent increase to salaries over the life of the deal.

Salary ranges for firefighter/paramedics will range from $60,249 a year to $88,899 a year in 2014-15 before increasing to a floor of $64,591 and a ceiling of $95,306 in 2018. Lieutenants will see their maximum earning power increase from $101,990 in 2014 to $109,341 in 2018. The increase to each level occurs every six months. The agreement also included many of the previous provisions about the 24-hour work shift, education reimbursements, no strike clauses and overtime policies.

DeRaedt takes over for James Moore, who announced his retirement in June. Moore had served as chief of the fire department since 2005 with DeRaedt in the deputy role for eight of those years.

 thanks Dennis
