Countryside Fire Protection District news

Excerpts from the ChicagoTribune.com:

On Wednesday, part-time Countryside Fire Protection District Firefighter David Senescu was surrounded by coworkers, whom he considers to be his family, and the team of doctors who saved his life four months ago when he had a heart attack while on duty.

The gathering at Advocate Condell Medical Center in Libertyville gave Senescu another opportunity to thank the people who are responsible for him being alive today.

Senescu recalled how Jan. 6 started like any other workday, but by the end of that night his whole life was changed.

It was Friday night when he started his shift at the firehouse, but something wasn’t quite right. “I wasn’t feeling my best, but I wasn’t feeling a heart attack either,” Senescu said. His discomfort persisted, and since he had eaten a spicy chili meal for dinner, he thought an antacid might help. He also gave in to his vice and smoked a cigarette.

The following hours were a whirlwind of action in probably the best place he could have been, with paramedics who paid attention to the signs and hooked him up to a monitor that showed he was in distress.

While enroute to the hospital, Countryside Firefighter Daniel McCormick and Firefighter Mike Raasch used a defibrillator three times on Senescu.

“I woke up at one point and heard Mike screaming my name. I asked him what he was screaming for. I thought I had just closed my eyes, but they said they had just shocked me,” Senescu said. “If it wasn’t for those guys, I wouldn’t be here.”

On Wednesday, Senescu said his close call with death has taught him a valuable lesson that he won’t forget or take for granted. Having been a smoker for close to 30 years and quitting suddenly has been a challenge, said the father of two boys, but he added that it’s a challenge he’s willing to take on. He is working to get healthy enough to go back to work at the fire station and be on the other end of a defibrillator, saving other lives along his coworkers.

2-Alarm fire in Hawthorn Woods, 5-20-17

The Countryside FPD received a call reporting a basement fire with explosions at 4 Keuka Court in Hawthorn Woods Saturday night (5/20/17). The homeowner stated that there were model cars with batteries in the basement which might have explained the explosive sounds. A moderate to heavy fog encompassed the area and firefighters arrived to light colored smoke escaping from the house.

The working fire was upgraded to a Full Still and the a Box Alarm for change of quarters companies only. Interior companies had difficulty locating the seat of the fire within the basement and the need for more substantial water supply required an upgrade to a Box Alarm for tenders. This incident occurred within the early stages of the 2-Alarm fire being fought by the Wauconda FPD in an adjacent district. As such, several of the units due to the Countryside fire were already committed at the Wauconda fire which required substituting companies from the next levels off the box card.

As the fire grew in intensity and compromised a section of the first floor, all crews were ordered out of the building as the tactics changed to a defensive attack. The alarm was upgraded to a 2nd Alarm roughly 35 minutes into the incident. The fire was contained shortly thereafter allowing firefighters to reenter the house to extinguish the remaining hot spots.

The simultaneous extra-alarm fires resulted in some long responses to the fire in Hawthorn Woods including units from Northbrook, Antioch, Newport Township, North Chicago, Hoffman Estates, Prospect Heights, Zion, Fox River Grove, and the Great lakes naval Training Center. By one unofficial count there were eight tenders at this fire.

Countryside Fire Protection District news

Excerpts from the dailyherald.com:

Countryside Fire Protection District firefighters teamed with a Vernon Hills High School teacher to demonstrate icy water rescues for students Thursday.

Outdoor/adventure education teacher Jerry Miceli played the victim for the demonstrations, which were staged at a pond near the school’s football stadium. He donned a insulated protective suit before repeatedly submersing himself in the water.

The students were told how to save themselves if they fall into a partially frozen lake and also how to save other people using ladders, rope or even extension cords.

“You can learn from a PowerPoint (presentation), but unless you do it, I don’t think you get the full benefit,” he said.

Countryside FPD house fire, 5-8-16

This from Larry Shapiro:

Countryside FPD firefighters were called to 26805 N Circle Drive in unincorporated Mundelein just after 1AM (5-8-16) by residents reporting that their house was on fire. Responding units were advised that the fire was blocking the front door and the family was outside but unable to flee a rear deck that was 10 feet above ground level.

The first engine confirmed a fire with flames visible from down the block and the alarm was upgraded to a Full Still. The fire was knocked down within minutes and companies due on the upgrade were returned, which is when I arrived.
