Chicago Fire Department news (more)

Excerpts from abc7chicago.com:

It’s been three days since retired Chicago FD Lt. Dwain Williams was killed in a shootout with three armed suspects in Morgan Park. Police believe his death was the result of an attempt to steal his Jeep Grand Cherokee.

The number of flowers continues to grow at a memorial and the amount of money being offered for any information that leads to an arrest in the case is growing, too. It’s now reached $34,000.

Adding $10,000 to the pot Sunday, the organization “I’m Telling, Don’t Shoot” has announced it has also hired an attorney to file a class action lawsuit against the manufacturers of certain vehicles, Jeeps among them, which in recent months have increasingly become the target of would-be thieves and carjackers armed with programming devices that can remote start a vehicle without the key fob.

And while police said there is no evidence to confirm that Williams’ killers were attempting to engage in that kind of high-tech theft, they do say it’s been an increasing problem over the last year, which might partly explain the dramatic increase in this type of crime.

Anyone with information that might lead to an arrest in Williams’ murder can submit a tip anonymously at CPDtip.com.

Chicago Fire Department news

Excerpts from Chicago.cbslocal.com:

Retired Chicago FD Lieutenant Dwain Williams was shot and killed Thursday afternoon during a carjacking attempt in Morgan Park that occurred around 2 p.m. when he was leaving a store at 11758 S. Western Ave. While walking to his vehicle, a dark-colored sedan pulled up and four men got out and bum rushed him. The men tried to take Williams’ vehicle. One of the assailants took out a gun and fired at least one shot, striking Williams in the abdomen. Williams had his own gun and fired at the assailants, but his wound proved fatal.

Finishing 26 years of service, Williams retired two years ago after spending much of his time with Engine 122 at 79th Street and Michigan Avenue. His years of service were honored through a processional with full escort from Advocate Christ Medical Center to the Cook County Medical Examiner’s office where Chicago firefighters were waiting.

A loving husband of 30 years and a father two four has been taken away.

Excerpts from Chicago.cbslocal.com:

Two seniors were found dead Thanksgiving Day night in a fire in the Old Irving Park neighborhood. Officials said the fire was caused by careless use of smoking materials, and an oxygen tank in the home helped fuel the blaze.

The fire department said a still-and-box alarm was called for the fire the two-and-a-half-story frame house at 4217 N. Kildare Ave. The house was fully engulfed by fire.

The bodies of 85-year-old Robert Szalacha and 76-year-old Carol Szalacha were found at the scene around 9:21 p.m. and were pronounced dead by fire department personnel. An autopsy on Friday determined Robert Szalacha died of carbon monoxide poisoning and thermal injuries, and Carol Szalacha died of thermal injuries and smoke inhalation.

Police said a 61-year-old woman was also in the house at the time of the fire, but refused treatment.

Flames were through the roof forcing firefighters into a defensive attack. The fire was extinguished at about 11:20 p.m.
