Fatal explosion in Bensenville, 11-11-20

Excerpts from abc7chicago.com:

A man in his 20’s was killed following a lab explosion inside Pureline Treatment Systems Wednesday afternoon in Bensenville. Firefighters took a hose line to search for the missing employee, trying to make their way through piles of debris and what turned out to be a toxic cloud caused by a damaged container of hydrochloric acid. Two firefighters were briefly hospitalized after inhaling the fumes.

“One lab was completely gone,” Fire Chief Scott Walker said. “The second lab, where the victim was ultimately discovered, you couldn’t make entry because it had a top, but no sides. It was being supported with nothing.”

The company manufactures chlorine dioxide technologies used to purify water. The victim has yet to be identified by the DuPage County Coroner. An official cause for the explosion has not yet been released.

Bensenville Fire Protection District news (more)

From the Bensenville Professional Firefighters Association, Local 2968 Facebook page:

Last week, this lone firefighter was protecting the town of Bensenville all by himself for about 20 minutes. Multiple calls needed the attention of 7 out of the 8 staffed firefighters. If the same events last year, it would have been 7 firefighters out of 11, if we were fully staffed for that day. 1 firefighter protecting the residents, instead of a possibility of 4, is a recipe for disaster. If any additional calls were to come in at that time, then the surrounding towns would have had to come into Bensenville, thus increasing the time you’re waiting for an ambulance or fire vehicle. Thankfully, there were no additional emergencies while the firefighter was by himself.

Some misinformation that has been shared is that we are implying if our referendum passes, that this dangerous situation or others like it will NEVER occur. Unfortunately, NO amount of staffing can completely prevent fatalities or prevent fires from destroying property. Increased staffing only DECREASES the PROBABILITY of events like this from occuring. Last year, when fully staffed, we had 11 firefighters on shift. Now, when fully staffed, we have 8 and if the referendum doesn’t pass we could go down to 5 firefighters a day. This INCREASES the chances that Bensenville resources will NOT be available when you call 911. Please vote yes for our referendum so we may increase our staffing back to a maximum of 11 firefighters a day.

Bensenville Fire Protection District news

From Bensenvillefpd.org:

About The Bensenville Fire Protection District

Welcome to the Bensenville Fire Protection District #2 website. We hope you will find our website useful and informative. Under a unique Intergovernmental Agreement, the Bensenville Fire Protection District #2 (Bensenville FPD) and the Addison Fire Protection District #1 (Addison FPD) have agreed to share the current Addison FPD fire chief as the Bensenville FPD undergoes various restructuring measures to conserve taxpayer dollars. This agreement will save the Bensenville FPD significant money while also providing the Addison FPD with revenues that are paid for these shared services. The Bensenville FPD has seen its taxpayer base shrink as properties once served have been annexed by the City of Chicago for the expansion of O’Hare Airport. This financial challenge, along with others, have prompted these cost savings measures as the Bensenville FPD balances providing exceptional fire, EMS, and rescue services within a tightened financial environment. We continue to strive to make Bensenville a better and safer place in which to live, work, and visit. On behalf of our trustees, officers, and firefighters, thank you for the privilege of serving you. If I can be of any service, please contact me at 630-350-3441 or by email at swalker@bensenvillefpd.org.

Sincerely,

Chief Scott Walker

thanks Drew

Fatal fire in Bensenville

Excerpts thedailyherald.com:

A man in his mid-80s was killed in a Tuesday morning house fire near Bensenville.

The man’s wife reported the blaze in the basement of the tri-level house on the 4N500 block of Church Road near White Pines Golf Club. Dispatchers received a 911 call at 8:23 a.m. Firefighters arrived at 8:30 a.m., met the wife outside the house and began battling the blaze which was quickly extinguished.

The man likely died from his injuries before firefighters were called, Bensenville Fire Protection District Chief Michael Spain said. The man had been confined to his bed for about 20 years, and fire officials had been to his house numerous times for medical emergencies. The fire was contained to that room, but there was smoke damage throughout the house. The structure was left uninhabitable.

The DuPage County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the blaze.
