Historic 5-11 Alarm fire at the Ford City Shopping Center in Chicago, 4-2-68

This from Steve Redick:

April 2, 1968, just days before the riots erupted. A 5-11 and 3 or 4 specials for a fire in a massive building. The press coverage with the spectacular large format cover photo is sadly a thing of the past now. I have enclosed one of Dave Fornell’s images from that day.

This from Josh Boyajian:

Here are some of my shots from the 2-11 alarm this morning. I arrived well after the 2-11 was pulled. There was still a lot of fire underneath the part of the roof that didn’t collapse where companies had a hard time directing their water streams.

Still & Box Alarm in a Chicago scrap yard, 12-6-15 (more)

This from Steve Redick:

Took in the still & box alarm Sunday at Cortland and Kingsbury, an industrial area with a fire in a large scrap metal operation. A big stack of junk cars was going. This location is right on the river, so as a result Engine 2, the large fireboat was sent to the scene. They eventually supplied a 4-inch line to Engine 55 which then supplied a multiversal. There was some thought about using the big guns, and the “crows nest” turret was raised on the rear of the boat, but there was not really a clear shot to the burning pile from the river location. Access in and around the scene was poor, and I was shooting directly into a bright, low sun … difficult conditions at best. I was able to get some interesting shots of the boat operation, as well as what I think was some kind of air monitor deployed by the haz mat company. All of the photos and video from this incident can be seen on my site

Vacant house fire in Prospect Heights, 11-9-15

This from Larry Shapiro:

Prospect Heights firefighters were called to 702 S Elmhurst Road shortly before 9PM on Monday night (11/9/15) for fire in a vacant house. This was a house that they’d been training in that afternoon. Police called it in reporting heavy smoke with fire in the attic.

Wheeling, Long Grove, and Arlington Heights companies responded on the Code 3 alarm . The fire was contained in under 30 minutes and it never broke through the roof.

Here are some photos and a video.

Group to research consolidation of 911 dispatching Lake County

Excerpts from the DailyHerald.com:

As Wauconda officials wrestle with a plan to shutter a local 911 dispatch center and join a regional service group, a new Lake County task force has formed to examine the issue on a broader scale.

Lake County Board Chairman Aaron Lawlor is among the task force members. He supports consolidating 911 centers. “It has been done successfully elsewhere, and I’m confident we can do it here.”

The group created by the county board in August includes Countryside Fire Protection District Chief Jeff Steingart, former Mundelein Fire Chief Tim Sashko, Vernon Hills Police Chief Mark Fleischhauer, Round Lake Beach Mayor Rich Hill and Lake Zurich dispatcher Leah Kelly.

In Lake County, no 911 center has been in the news as much as Wauconda’s. Officials and residents have squabbled over its future for more than a year. Under the current plan, a regional organization called CenCom would handle 911 calls for Wauconda police and the Wauconda Fire District. Trustees could vote on a consolidation deal Oct. 6.

The other agencies served by Wauconda’s dispatchers, the Tower Lakes and Lakemoor police departments, would need to find new service providers if the center closes.

Since Wauconda’s 911 battle began, state lawmakers have approved legislation that calls for dispatch centers to consolidate significantly in the future.

Lake County’s Lawlor said 911 consolidation has been a top issue since a 2014 local leadership summit. “This presents tremendous opportunities to improve quality (and) efficiency and provide cost savings.”

thanks Dan

Technology Center of DuPage fire science open house

This from Andy Hilk:

On my days off I teach a fire science class to high school students that is run through the Technology Center of DuPage (TCD).  TCD is a Career and Technical Education (CTE) High School for juniors and seniors attending high school in DuPage County and has about 1,100 students enrolled that attend either a morning or afternoon session.  Programs of study include Fire Science/EMT, Criminal Justice, Auto Body, Construction, and many more.

This past Saturday, TCD, which is on Swift Road in Addison, had our annual expo and the students participated in a mock crash scenario in the parking lot assisted by the Addison FPD.  Last year the Wood Dale FPD donated two vehicles to TCD;  a 1980’s vintage Pierce Dash which was x-Engine 68 I believe, and a Ford/Wheeled Coach ambulance. The rigs have now been lettered as TCD rigs with an acknowledgement to Wood Dale.
