Chicago Fire Department LODD – MaShawn Plummer

It is my sad duty to report the passing of Chicago Firefighter/EMT MaShawn Plummer of Engine 94 who was inured in a fire on Mamora. He joined CFD in December of last year he is 30 years old. (Langford)

Fatal fire in Chicago, 12-18-21

Excerpts from the ChicagoSunTimes.com:

One person was killed and another injured in a fire Saturday night that broke out just before 8 p.m. in the 5100 block of West Grand Avenue. One person was taken to Community First Medical Center, where they were later pronounced dead. The other was listed in serious condition at West Suburban Medical Center in Oak Park.

Crews have not been able to complete a search of the structure due to the building’s instability.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.

Fatal fire in McHenry, 11-4-21

McHenry Fire Chief Steve Spraker said a fire started around 12:07 a.m. Thursday 11/4/21 and was contained inside a single unit in a two-story complex in the 800-block of North Southgate Street.

The 77-year-old victim was sitting in the living room lighting a cigarette when he accidentally dropped it and the couch caught fire. His 70-year-old wife managed to escape the flames and was treated on the scene for minor smoke inhalation, but her husband, who is visually impaired, was unable to make it out. 

Two of the other units in the building have been deemed uninhabitable by the city.

The McHenry Police Department, McHenry Township Fire Protection District, and the Illinois State Fire Marshall’s Office continue to investigate.

Fatal fire in Prospect Heights

Prospect Heights firefighters responded to a fire around 6:45 a.m. Friday at the Lake Run Condos, a 5-story multifamily building at 16 E Old Willow Road. The fire started in a second-floor unit, and crews evacuated the entire building as firefighters worked to extinguish the fire.

Although firefighters were able to put the fire out within two minutes, the 65-year-old woman who lived in the unit where the fire started died.

The fire was contained to that unit, and after clearing smoke from the common areas of the building, the other residents were able to go back inside by 8 a.m.

Fatal fire in Rockford, 9-11-21

A man is dead after a fire erupted in a home Saturday afternoon in the 1600 block of 9th Street in Rockford.

The Rockford Fire Department says the man was trapped inside at the fire room. When firefighters were able to reach him, he was already dead.

Another woman inside the home survived the fire and is being helped by the Red Cross for setting up emergency housing.

The fire remains under investigation but officials say it appears to be accidental in nature at this time.

Fatal fire in Peotone, 8-14-21

At approximately 12:22 a.m., on Saturday, August 14, the Peotone Fire Protection District. responded to a reported structure fire in a multi-family apartment building at 501 S. Schroeder Ave.

The first units arrived within five minutes of the initial dispatch and crews reported smoke showing from the second floor. Additional personnel and equipment were called.

Firefighters reported entering the second floor and found heavy smoke conditions. As crews searched, they found a victim deceased in the bedroom. The identity of the individual has not yet been released. A search of the remaining units confirmed no other people were inside.

Crews extinguished the fire and got the situation under control within 30 minutes.

Fire damage was contained to the apartment, but smoke and water damage extended throughout the other apartments. The Red Cross is assisting with the displaced residents.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation. Responding to the scene were crews from Manhattan, Monee, Beecher, Manteno, Frankfort, University Park, New Lenox, Mokena, Crete Township, Steger Estates, Wilmington, Bourbonnais, Crete, Country Club Hills, Grant Park, Richton Park, and Orland fire departments.

MABAS Division 19 Investigators, MABAS 27 Investigators, the Arson Investigators Task Force, and the Office of the State Fire Marshal Arson Investigator responded to conduct the fire investigation.

Libertyville Fire Department news

A Libertyville police officer on patrol spotted the fire just after 3:20 a.m. in the 100-block of Johnson Avenue on Friday. Libertyville firefighters and several other fire departments responded to the scene to extinguish the blaze.

Once the fire was put out and first responders firefighters searched the home, a deceased individual was found.

The Libertyville Police Department, Lake County Major Crime Task Force, Illinois State Fire Marshal’s Office, Libertyville Fire Department, and Lake County Coroner’s Office are investigating the incident.

The individual’s identity is being withheld, pending notification of next of kin.

Fatal fire in East St Louis, 8-6-21

Five children died in a fire Friday morning in an apartment building in East St. Louis, Illinois. The fire started after the mother of the five children went to pick up another adult from work.

When she returned home, she tried to get the children out herself, but was unsuccessful. Four children were pronounced dead at the scene. The fifth child died on the way to the hospital.

The fire started at about 3:45 a.m. It is unclear if the building had working smoke alarms. The Illinois State Fire Marshal and the Illinois State Police Department are investigating the fire.

The children have been identified as Deontay Davis, Jr., 9, twins Heaven and Nevaeh, 8, Jabari Johnson, 4, and Loyal Dunigan, 2.

Fatal fire in Joliet, 7-27-21

The East Joliet Fire Protection District confirms lightning caused a smoky fire that killed an 85-year-old man Raymond Ziegler’s in Joliet.

“During the weather that we were having, the severity of the lightning it just hit and took the house with it,” said Deputy Fire Chief Matt Grohar, East Joliet Fire Protection District.

Neighbors told firefighters when they arrived that Ziegler lived alone in the home.

“There was furniture and many other obstacles that were in the house at the time which compromised getting in and success maneuvering inside,” Grohar said.

After a second search, firefighters found Ziegler. They said he died from smoke inhalation. He was a Korean War Veteran and had nine great grandchildren.
