Rusty – I couldn’t have said it better myself. Definitely sounds like Carpentersville manipulated the bidding process to get what they wanted. I just can’t imagine this rig holding up long term with day in day out use running EMS, car wrecks, etc. Plus they opted for the Impel with is the mid size Cummins L9. Great engine but this is a lot of rig for a L9.

Surprised that either E-One or Rosenbauer wouldn’t have demo rigs available for sale that would meet the village’s needs.

There is a lot of smoke in mirrors on these numbers. There are some games being played. Why would 2 vendors offer tandem axles and 1 offer a single axle light duty. This sounds like a fire dept wanting the Pierce and doing anything they can possibly do by changing numbers and time frames. Pierce is producing trucks in about a year, E-One is about 14-15 Months, & Rosenbauer 14-15 Months. The latter two are longer because their order backlog is at record high. We are not comparing apples to apples. You are comparing a light duty ladder with a ton of restrictions on it vs a heavy duty tandem axle ladder. This is like comparing a Ford Ranger to a Ford F-250 Super Duty. But some FD gotta have a Pierce. Some people will do anything to have brand P. Even though they are replacing a company that failed already.

Dynamite question why they would offer a tandem when a single seemed to be desired by Carpentersville. Makes me think that EOne and Rosenbauer didnt feel a single axle was doable with everything they want maybe?

Mike – If you reference the previous Carpentersville post announcing their order for this ladder truck, you will see a lot of logical dialogue to why single axle quints don’t work well. Pierce talks the Ascendant up as if it’s the greatest aerial on the market. Unfortunately, this isn’t true.
I thought I heard Pierce/Oshkosh put some sort of patent on the Ascendant so that competitors can’t produce a 100′ ladder on a single axle quint. E-One was offering a single axle 100′ quint but they didn’t offer it in this case. Anybody know any further information? I thought Rosenbauer was also offering a single axle 100′ quint. Why did E-One and Rosenbauer propose a tandem?

The 107 Pierce has a 750lb dry 500lb wet tip load. But several are failing the ladder test. PG county has several. Bloomington Illinois just had their brand new 107 acendent fail it’s ladder test. So it wasn’t delivered. The steel in the 3rd fly section is coming apart.

Mike C. What is the real ladder rating on this? Isn’t it a light duty or medium duty ladder? Combining the engine and tower is smart. They don’t have the staffing for both, I think they’re running 2 on each company. If I remember right they only have 3 and 4 story buildings at its tallest. Hopefully they put a decent ground ladder compliment on this. Also they’re are a few other trucks in the area: west Dundee, Huntley, Algonquin, Hoffman estates, Elgin.

The maneuverability of a single axle is nice but other than that, why did they push for a single axle ladder? Unfortunately, Carpentersville fleet has been aged to the point that they cannot wait. Hopefully the Pierce serves them well but I’d definitely be looking for other options if I was in their position. Pierce’s quality certainly hasn’t improved over the past 20 years.

What a mess. They’re kind of stuck choosing pierce which is the manufacturer of the tower ladder that didn’t last 20 years under a job heavy workload. Nobody is going to wait 2 years for a rig and nobody is gonna pay 1.2 million and wait 18 months for a Rosenbauer single axle quint. The time to build is crazy and the prices are crazy too. That has to be more to the story.

I wonder why it would take 2 years most fire rigs don’t take more than a year at most

Yes but who wants to wait 2 yrs
