They only have 1 engine, 1 truck and 1 ambulance in reserve? What happens if two rigs go out of service?
#2 by Scott on November 20, 2017 - 4:51 PM
Squad 55A has most of the MABAS Div 1 TRT equipment cache. The rest is on the Elk Grove Village Special OPS Trailer. The other MABAS 1 towns (including Palatine Sqd 85) have their own TRT equipment that responds on a response.
Schaumburg’s reserve fleet is 1 eng, 1 truck & 1 amb. Unknown for the current Sqd 55 status.
The Rosenbauer pumper/squad was not ordered with a tandem axle because the equipment needs on 55A where much different & less 14yrs ago when it was spec’d out as well as the needs for MABAS Div 1 on 55A. IT MAKES complete sense to plan for now and future for equipment needs by making more room on the new Pierce Sqd 55.

Sebastian, this is a Pierce squad. I’d imagine after the first single axle squad-engine, they decided a tandem would better suit their needs. And although it may only run 1,200 or so runs per year, they currently don’t have a spare for the squad. If 55 goes out for PM or whatever, they use a spare engine, which probably doesn’t have the storage capacity needed…replacing this gives them a workable reserve just for the squad. No matter what, the SFD powers that be decided that a tandem axle squad is what they need to best serve the citizens that they protect…Harry, instead of calling them silly on an internet forum, call up the chief and ask him why they did it…

So here is a burning question.. after the consolidation of
The squad and the second engine. Why wasn’t the rosenbaur squad 55
Ordered with a double axel? And why was it thougt of now??
#5 by Mike on November 13, 2017 - 6:37 PM
Harry the 1976 seagrave you are talking about isn’t an inservice spare. That is the old hook and ladder 51 which is a memorial to the late billy grant LODD 3/23/2007. There is talk that H&L 51 and 661 the snorkel are going to clintonville for the museum.
As for Schaumburg with a tandem axle engine or squad or whatever they call it. It’s a tandem because of weight issues due to equipment. Years ago when Schaumburg ran 5 engines and a dedicated squad the squad was equipped by mabas division 1. When the squad and second engine at 52’s got consolidated it was decided that they were going to do this concept of combining and adding more equipment. So with that there is more added weight requiring a tandem. So here is the thing. This is the second tandem engine they are getting for this company and if they didn’t think it was needed they wouldn’t be getting it. From what I know that rig is a pain to drive in the area because of its size.

marty yes Chicago does still have a 76 or so seagrave ladder as of 6 months or so ago and one more thing on Schaumburg if they only get 1000 runs a year then running a da makes no sense inless it will be 55a in the future then that makes sense either way it is a waste as I see it that is my opinion u all have your opinions
#7 by Cmk420 on November 13, 2017 - 3:50 PM
If I may chime in, the same thing happens in Carol Stream. Squad 27 is a two-piece rig. The actual Squad 27 is a rescue pumper that runs first out in its still district. 27A is more a Division 12 asset, with the majority of the specialty equipment on it. Not sure how the box cards are set up.
#8 by Marty Coyne on November 13, 2017 - 3:46 PM
FYI Chicago has no 70’s rigs in service at all. The oldest was 661 the 82′ reserve snorkel that went OOS in the last few months. There are some 80’s trucks and towers but nothing older in service even as a spare. Yes the oldest engines in frontline service are 20 years old.

Squad 55A only runs on in town Code 4s, hazmat, water rescues, TRT incidents, or if squad 55 decides to take it along with them on extrication responses. Other than that it will go on division 1 mabas calls. Squad 55A in 2016 only went on 8 runs, so hearing that you know it doesn’t move much. As Brian said he is correct on how squad 55 runs it’s a rescue/pumper and it acts as an engine and has its own still district, Squad 55 ran 1,239 runs last year so thinking it’s a 11-12 year old rig running average up to 1,000+ calls a year it’s a perfect time to get a new rig in there and send the current one to reserve.

harry: Don’t understand why you have to be so negative about this. If a department is receiving new apparatus, God bless them! Besides this isn’t the 1970’s still. Fire apparatus are so much more complicated now, with safety advancements, electronic systems, emissions control systems, higher horsepower engines, ect…
Schaumburg is fortunate that they have an good working relationship with their village administration who understands operational needs. Their fleet service wants standardize the manufacturer supplier to maintain consistency for parts and familiarity with repairs and service. Schaumburg is also fortunate that the municipal revenue generated supports their fire department budget to afford a scheduled vehicle replacement program. For a busy department, call volume wise, it is justifiable to replace heavily worn apparatus before maintenance costs and repairs skyrocket. As far as a tandem axle squad, it is more than likely engineered in such a manner to handle the weight distribution and abuse as someone else previously stated.

Harry you are NOT helping your argument, Having almost 50 year old pieces of equipment in reserve is not a valid point.
Schaumburg has a plan and is building what they feel they need. 55A is not on the road all the time, in fact it runs on certain calls only along with squad 55. Squad 55 is actually run as a rescue/pumper. It is quite possible they are planning on using what looks to be extra space with a little bigger front line rig to take some of the day to day type equipment off 55A. And then possibly add some specialized equipment to 55A for the various special responses it takes in.
We don’t know any of this but to sit and get on a high horse about a department moving a 12-year old rig into reserve is well for lack of a better term right now……moronic

to shane how is it better for the village of schuamburg to have a double axle egine squad running around for general calls that makes no sense and u are right I am not a ff if thought I am not sure how u knew that but I know more about the fire service when it comes to vehicles than a lot of the ff do and if u think that rigs are replaced every 10-12 years yeah maybe in Schaumburg Arlington hts and even most places on the east coast but take for instance around here that is not always the case look at Chicago they have 20 plus year old engines and trucks Chicago even has old 70’s seagraves in reserve
#13 by Shane on November 12, 2017 - 9:53 PM
Harry, your comment makes no sense. You are not a fireman and or live there so that assumption is false. It looks to be this rig is custom and is going to serve its purpose great. Most of Cities, Towns replace their rigs every 10 years from frontline service. Schaumburg’s current Squad is 12 years old. I do not work there but I can account for Schaumburg being a very busy Suburb. So I’d imagine there is plenty of miles, wear, tear, and hours on their rigs. As for the double axle, it probably serves a great purpose with weight distribution and allowing them to support what they carry on Squad Co. 55.

Michael M,
You’re correct Squad 55A is a division 1 rig / asset with Hazmat, water rescue, and TRT equipment on it. Also the current squad 55 will be put in reserve status when the new squad get delivered last I heard.
#15 by harry on November 12, 2017 - 7:22 PM
yes while there squad is a 2006 that is not really that old it does not make sense why they would get a double axle sqd and keep the other double axle why do they need 2 double axles a waste of money
#16 by Shane on November 12, 2017 - 3:18 PM
Their Current Squad is going to be 12 years old in front line service. I’d say it’s perfect time for a new rig. Looks like it’s well thought out and is going to be pretty neat. Good for Schaumburg.
#17 by Shane on November 12, 2017 - 3:14 PM
It’s called a rig replacement plan. I assume the current squads going to be sent to the reserve fleet
#18 by Matt on November 12, 2017 - 1:19 PM
this makes no sense in any way why would they need 2 tandem axle sqds on the road and why would they get rid of a 2006 sqd already
#19 by Michael m on November 12, 2017 - 12:44 PM
Isn’t 55A a MABAS Division 1 asset with a lot of MABAs equipment on it?
How about Palatine Squad 85? I am guessing there also has to be some MABAS equipment on it?
#20 by Tyler Tobolt on November 12, 2017 - 11:07 AM
Pete,
Squad 55 will be the only apparatus being replaced, Squad 55A will remain the same rig it has currently at Station 55.
#21 by Michael m on November 12, 2017 - 9:57 AM
Looks like it is going to be a big vehicle! I am guessing that one of the compartments will contain the pump house like it is on the current squad.
#22 by Cmk420 on November 12, 2017 - 9:06 AM
As I understand, they are only replacing Squad 55. Squad 55A will remain as is.
#23 by Pete on November 12, 2017 - 9:03 AM
Is Schaumburg going to a 1 peice squad?
