Fire Apparatus and Equipment, August FDNY restoration article. Restore and Preserve – The 9/11 Restoration Story

This is pretty special to me personally. It has been truly heartwarming to have had as much help as I have received to enable me to something so special and unique.

When I was interviewed in New York in 2011, the reporter said that there were so many sad stories about 9/11, she was happy to report on a topic that wasn’t so heart-wrenching.

To see my mom’s picture used in the article really pulled at my heart strings, as she has been gone since 2007. My dad and many others taught me so my things in life, but my mother taught me to see things through (finish) to the very end and to do things with quality and integrity.

Thank you to all who helped see these restorations thru.

La Grange FD LODD Anniversary

From La Grange Fire Department Fire Chief Daniel J. Reda:

Today marks the 100th Anniversary of the Line of Duty Death (LODD) of firefighters: Walter Busch and George “Red” Werdell. While responding to a fire the engine they were responding on was struck by a train at the Burlington Northern Railroad crossing. An account of the accident was published in the Chicago Tribune on August 31, 1925 and read:

“Witnesses to the crash, which occurred shortly after the watchman left the gates, declared the engineer of the train had given no warning whistle, and that the speed of the train was fifty miles an hour.

Chief of Police L.G. Matthews of La Grange in his automobile and Capt. Harry Pullman, commanding a hook and ladder company, had safely made the crossing. Following close behind was a pumper truck, driven by Fireman George Werdell and manned by Walter Bush, William Powell and Carl Swanson. The flyer struck it squarely carrying the wreckage three blocks.

Bush was killed instantly, Werdell died last night at the Hinsdale sanitarium. Powell was taken there also, and is in critical condition. Swanson saw the train and jumped escaping injury.”

I have included pictures of the engine after the accident, as well as one of the replacement engine provided by the American La France Company and one from the Illinois Firefighters Memorial.

Remember the Fallen Brothers.

Fire Service news

Excerpts from wprnews.com:

The city of La Crosse is suing three fire truck manufacturers in federal court, accusing them of unlawfully coordinating to limit the supply of trucks and raise prices.

The class action suit was filed last week against the Oshkosh Corporation, REV Group, and Rosenbauer America. It also names the Fire Apparatus Manufacturers’ Association.

REV Group and Oshkosh Corporation called the lawsuit meritless. Rosenbauer America could not be reached for comment. The city of La Crosse declined to comment on the suit.

According to the civil complaint, fire truck prices have doubled in the last decade, exceeding the rate of inflation. The three manufacturers listed in the complaint are “responsible for increasing fire truck prices and perpetuating lengthy backlogs” as they control 70 to 80 percent of the U.S. fire truck market, the suit says. The lawsuit also alleges the manufacturers used the backlog as an excuse for increasing the final price of new fire trucks after they go into production.

From the mid-2010s to 2020, REV Group acquired six different fire equipment brands, including companies that had been direct competitors in the fire truck industry, the suit says. The acquisitions “solidified REV Group’s position as the top fire truck manufacturer in the United States,” the complaint states.

Similarly, Oshkosh Corporation subsidiary Pierce Manufacturing completed a pair of acquisitions of fire equipment manufacturers in 2021 and 2022, giving Oshkosh Corporation control over “a full quarter of the U.S. fire truck market,” the lawsuit says. Oshkosh Corporation also “embarked on a strategy of consolidating the U.S. brands already within its purview, reducing geographic overlap between its dealers” from 2018 to 2025, which “reduced or eliminated competition among Pierce subsidiaries,” the suit says.

Aside from using consolidations, the suit alleges that Oshkosh Corporation, REV Group and Rosenbauer have worked to cooperate with each other instead of compete. The manufacturers allegedly exchanged confidential and “competitively sensitive” economic information through the Fire Apparatus Manufacturers’ Association. The suit accuses the manufacturers of using that data to “coordinate price increases and suppress production,” as well as to “monitor their co-conspirators to ensure continued adherence to the conspiracy.”

The lawsuit also alleges the manufacturers’ association organizes two meetings each year, where manufacturers have “ample time and opportunity to exchange sensitive economic information and coordinate supply restrictions and price hikes at these meetings.”

The suit asks the court to declare that the manufacturers and association violated antitrust law, require the manufacturers to stop their alleged anti-competitive behavior and to award La Crosse and other possible plaintiffs damages.

Orland Park Fire Protection District news

Excerpts from ChicagoTribune.com:

Trustees for the Orland Park Fire Protection District voted Tuesday to increase restrictions on public participation in board meetings, dividing the board between trustees elected in 2023 against those elected in May 2025.

Tina Zekich and Angela Greenfield, both elected in 2023, voted against the policy change. Zekich said the policy comes after the public voiced concerns at a June meeting about an ambulance being taken offline. She said the board is seeking to silence the public after residents “finally” spoke out this year.

Greenfield said that before Tuesday night, the policy had not been changed in over a decade, but Bridget Tolan, elected in May, voted for the policy, saying it was a matter of upholding decorum following recent meetings where public comment went on for hours.

The new policy limits the public comment period to 30 minutes, which can be extended by a majority vote. The policy also prohibits members of the public from discussing political matters or having noisy outbursts, such as applauding, cheering or booing during public comment, which Zekich called subjective.

The board president can remove people from the meeting for not following these rules, and an attendee removed for disruptive behavior can lose their right to attend meetings, under the policy.

The board also added a sign-up form to be completed before someone can speak, and reduced the time each person has to speak from five to three minutes.

Zekich said two police officers started attending the board meetings in July as a means of security, following the June meeting with high public participation about the ambulance coming offline.

“Instead of encouraging people to come out and speak publicly, now we’re going to discourage them,” Zekich said. “I would be so embarrassed to watch somebody be physically removed from the meeting for applauding. We should be listening to people.”

Dan Fagan, president of the Orland Professional Firefighters Local 2754 and an Orland Park firefighter, said the policy change affects the firefighters ability to get the public to help them improve the community. He said firefighters on-duty don’t talk politics, so if residents raise an issue, firefighters encourage them to speak at a board meeting. He said the union “just doesn’t think it’s right to silence the taxpayers who pay for these services, who you’re supposed to be representing,” noting some who spoke at the June meeting had a disability and relied on the ambulance services.

The policy also gives the board chair the authority to deny a trustee’s request to place an item of discussion on the board agenda, specifically if the request is similar to a matter the board addressed in the last 12 months.

Board members are required to provide the requested agenda item on the Wednesday before the agenda goes out, and the board has the right to review it, under the policy. Previously, board members could add agenda items by noon the Friday before the meeting.

Zekich said this rule comes after she, along with Greenfield, requested the meetings be livestreamed at two meetings this summer. When the board refused, Zekich requested an investigation of the district’s finances, which the board also denied.

As for the ambulance issue that brought the public outcry in June, the board unanimously voted July 22 to put it back in operation for 12 hours each day, after taking if offline in June. Fagan said the district awaits approval from the Illinois Department of Public Health for the vehicle’s license, which he said could take a week to six months.

The district added the ambulance to its fleet last October. Fagan said the district needed it for the past 10 years due to rising ambulance calls.

The district recorded 1,176 calls in the past month, according to data announced at Tuesday’s meeting. To accommodate the high number of calls, Fagan said the district started using ambulances from neighboring districts, which delays response times.

Fagan said he is glad the board moved forward with appointing a new chief Tuesday. He said the district has been “stagnant” for a few months since the chief, deputy chief, and operations chief retired in May. The board voted Tuesday night to authorize its president to negotiate an employment agreement with Kevin Doyle, the current fire chief for the Homer Township Fire Protection District, as fire chief administrator for Orland.
