Firefighters from Boone County worked to extinguish a trolley bus on fire on Interstate 90 near Belvidere on Wednesday night.
Boone County Fire Protection District #2 firefighters were called to the scene around 11:06 p.m., near mile marker 27, and found heavy smoke coming from the vehicle, which became engulfed in flames along the side of the roadway.
The fire was brought under control within 20 minutes, utilizing approximately 2,800 gallons of water from a tanker. There are no fire hydrants lining the interstate.
The driver was the sole occupant of the vehicle and managed to escape uninjured.
The fire is believed to have started in the rear of the vehicle, where the engine is located. The trolley bus was thought to be manufactured in the 2010s and is owned by a private company.
