To summarize, Tower 24’s platform collided with a building two blocks away from the firehouse about two weeks ago. The platform was heavily damaged but the rest of the truck remains unharmed. It was sent back to the manufacturer to get a new platform, perhaps a new main since the main may have been bent. From what I have heard it is expected to restart service between November of 2024 and March of 2025 or sooner depending on several factors. With the supply chain backed up and demand for more parts it may take awhile for Tower 24 to get a new main so it can restart service. They are currently using former Truck 40, a 2000 E-One 100′ Aerial Ladder Truck that carries the shop ID number E292. Accidents happen now and again, Especially with the E-One’s.

I read in the CFDShopnumbers Website that TL-24 is down from an accident of mechanical so I don’t know if they are in a spare Tower or a spare Truck. Apparently It’s Aerial problems.

This order is probably more directed from a dispatching standpoint, so that OEMC knows if tower ladders which are supposed to be still or second trucks and are not, then that affects the company assignments should the alarm move up to a Still and Box. They will have to pull a Tower Ladder from somewhere to respond to the fire.

Chicagoland fire photos, while those are all the spare Tower Ladders that Chicago owns, most of them are not being used as spares currently. 2 of the HMEs (E281 and E283) are unable to be used due to the hydraulics for the buckets being broken causing the buckets to tilt forward in front of the windshield. The ALF (E295) is not being used for unknown reasons and 1 of the Pierces’ (E315) was rear-ended by (I believe) Truck 32 while acting as TL23 and is now in the shops leaving only E280 (being used by TL23 until their replacement is in service) and E316 (was being used by TL54 for a while but is now available) as the only Tower Ladder spares.

The Spare Towers still in service with CFD are
3-1996 HME/LTI Towers E-280/281/283
1-2000 ALF/LTI Tower E-295
2-2002 Pierce Dash Towers E-315/316
1-2006 Pierce Dash Aerial Tower E-332 (AT8 Spare and Tower/Truck Spare if no spare T/TL are avialible)
The Frontline Towers in Service are
7-2017-2022 E-one Tower Ladders (5,10,14,16,21,24,39)
1-2005 Pierce Tower Ladder (54)
1- 2019 E-one Aerial tower (8)
There is 1 E-one one order that should be delivered soon replacing TL23s permanently OOS Pierce

Madison, CFD calls a pre-piped straight truck an Aerial Tower. The rest of the straight ladder fleet is not pre-piped. It’s confusing because any time you here “tower” you think of bucket.

For your information, The tower ladder is a truck with a 100′ ladder with a platform at the end. The Aerial Tower is basically a truck with a pre-piped waterway.

For Chicago terminology, I take it a truck is a straight ladder, but what’s the difference between a tower ladder and an aerial tower?

Michael my comment was sarcastic. The city could care less if a tower ladder or a horse and buggy responded. If they did care the shape of the fleet wouldn’t be as disastrous as it currently is and has been since forever. The fact that an order needs to come out to notify everyone that you are no longer a tower because none are available is humorous also as you would think that the people in the places, ie, officers would have the IQ level to know to do that already. This clown show just gets worse every day. For the second biggest department in the country they are the leader in disfunction.

Tower 23 has been using spares for over a year, many times they have used the Tower designation when in a truck, Mike, as for spare TLs they have a couple Pierce, at least 1 HME & the ALF, the spare for AT8 is the 105′ Pierce that was AT1

Logical, how many spare tower ladders does CFD have? I am guessing all the 1980 E-Ones are gone. Do they still have the 96 HME’s? I am guessing they don’t have a spare for AT 8. I am guessing if the Aerial Tower goes OOS, they are assigned a regular truck.
