Help Tim Olk Kick Cancer

Grace Olk is organizing this fundraiser.

#chicagoareafire.com; #TimOlk; #cancer; #GoFundMe;

As many of you have heard by now, my uncle Timothy was recently diagnosed with bladder cancer. My uncle is one of the most kind hearted humans you’ll encounter. He has done so much for the firefighter community through the years with his passion and talent for photography, but also his selfless attitude of always putting others first. With the immediate future unknown and the timeline for his treatment up in the air, we’ve started this fundraiser as a way to take the stress of the bills piling up off his plate and allow him to focus on recovering.

Two weeks ago when I a missed call from uncle Timmy, I assumed it was another “I ran into someone you know” call, because that’s who my uncle is … someone who everyone knows because of a picture, a favor, a meal they shared together … the list goes on. He is always there for everyone. It’s our turn to be there for him.

Decatur Fire Department news

Excerpts from wandtv.com:

Two Decatur firefighters were taken to the hospital after responding to a third-alarm fire at ADM’s East Plant, that was detected by employees in the feed house of the corn processing plant at ADM’s Decatur complex during some maintenance activities Monday.

The plant was evacuated, and all employees were safely accounted for.

First arriving crews from the Decatur Fire Department found heavy fire and smoke from the industrial structure that contained process tanks. They accessed the fire area and discovered heavy fire in a processing tank that was spreading into adjacent tanks. Large attack lines were deployed from a ladder truck to keep the fire from spreading to the rest of the structure while ADM employees injected steam and water into tanks.

The incident commander upgraded to a third alarm. Crews were on scene for 12 hours before the fire was completely under control.

Two Decatur firefighters were transported to the hospital. One was treated and released and the other was admitted for observation.

Excerpts from nbcchicago.com:

Chicago FD Lieutenant Kevin Ward

Chicago Fire Department Lieutenant Kevin Ward passed away Tuesday, 18 days after he was injured while working a fire in the 8300 block of West Balmoral Avenue. Ward was one of three firefighters injured in the blaze on Aug. 11. A mayday call was issued during that fire, with two firefighters, including Ward, ending up trapped in the basement of the home.

He was taken to an area hospital for treatment for burns and smoke inhalation, and was originally listed in critical condition. He was later upgraded to serious condition on Aug. 13, with officials saying he was making steady improvement.

He remained hospitalized after the fire, and passed away on Tuesday morning.

A procession will escort Ward from Loyola Medical Center to the Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office on Tuesday afternoon.

Ward, 59, joined the department in 1996.

East Peoria Fire Department news

Excerpts from 25newsnow.com:

The East Peoria Fire Department is offering a way to help in the fight against breast cancer by working to sell T-shirts donned with pink ribbons, and a pink logo. They’re doing this ahead of October, which is recognized as Breast Cancer Awareness Month. The proceeds will be donated to the Susan G. Komen Memorial.

The shirts also honor a survivor in the community, by incorporating their initials. The survivor wishes to remain anonymous, but is someone who is known to, or has impacted those at the fire department.

Firefighter paramedic Tyler Young says having the shirts pay respect to a survivor this year was a new idea compared to years past. They hope to continue honoring those who have overcome breast cancer. “We figured what better year to start it than this year? And hopefully going forward in the future we would like to see other shirts be in honor to somebody else that may be known to the City of East Peoria residents.”

The deadline to order a shirt is midnight September 4th. If you’re interested in supporting the cause, a link to the shirts can be found on The East Peoria Fire Department’s Facebook page.

Fire service news

Excerpts from ktnv.com:

The people who’ve spent days helping Mt. Charleston residents after destructive floodwaters swept through their community now need some help themselves.

Flood waters that brought destruction to Mt. Charleston over the weekend also dealt a heavy blow to the local volunteer fire department.

On Friday, community members established a GoFundMe campaign aimed at helping them rebuild.

According to Kim Koster, who started the campaign, the Mt. Charleston Volunteer Fire Department building was severely compromised in the flooding, which destroyed much of their equipment and supplies that took years to accumulate.

The remnants of Tropical Storm Hilary dropped 6-8 inches of rain on Mt. Charleston and Lee Canyon, resulting in flash flooding that swept away highways and roads, damaged homes and compromised the community’s infrastructure.

Days later, local officials and residents are still assessing the damage. Major roadways were heavily damaged and remained closed to the public on Friday, the Nevada Department of Transportation stated. On Thursday, Lee Canyon Resort officials announced an abrupt end to their summer season as a result of the flood damage. The U.S. Forest Service also announced an indefinite closure of the Spring Mountains National Recreation Area.

As of early Friday afternoon, Koster’s campaign had raised a little over $1,000 of its $50,000 goal.

“Please help us help them by donating whatever you’re able,” Koster wrote. “No donation is too small, & benefits not only them but the entire community of Mt. Charleston and the millions of visitors a year that love and appreciate our mountain.”
