You’re right Tim I forgot about the old times when aerial ladders were painted white thanks for reminding me….

Richie, the problem here is that the site is a blog with a mix of seasoned highly experienced firefighters like yourself and well intended lesser experienced firefighters and fire buffs.
Unfortunately when there is a legit post with just a first name on here, facts and opinions of experienced members of the fire service or apparatus EVTs isn’t taken seriously.
I totally understand where you were going with adequate compartment space and a realistic necessary amount of ground ladders carried. But you have to keep in mind that every department in the Chicago metro area runs differently and have different priorities on what they spec and carry on their apparatus.
I believe I know who you are and definitely know that you talk the talk and walk the walk.

Great points Tim. I guess it really doesn’t matter where you put the Q does it truly make any difference in the cab as far as the noise is concerned?
Of course in the past they didn’t have quiet engines like today so that obviously offsets the siren. As far as the painted ladders, could some of those be wraps?
I too like to see Old Glory on those. The Canadian flag looks good on there too so you know that someone takes pride in that job.

I did not know you could get a Pierce Velocity with front leaf springs. That’s a pretty nice perk if you ask me!

So after 25years in this field I’ve reached my limit with “experts” on everything. My opinion on anything is just that, an option. I was under the impression that was what this site was for. So informative content and opinions could be shared. I’m out, not interested in being told I don’t know what I’m talking about or being questioned by people I don’t even know. It’s annoying I just don’t care enough about this crap anymore.

So this rig has 144 feet of ground ladders. Leaf suspension on the front (no Tak 4). Air bags on the rear (no leafs). From the Pierce site. FACTS: Harry where the hell are ya?? LOL
Although things could have changed as they usually do at : Pre-construction, Mid Construction, Pre-paint, final inspection etc. There’s always an OOPs at each stage, and sometimes a big OOPS when at final inspection someone notices it’s the wrong color. Supposed to be PPG 4279 and not 4289. (Been down that road before).
Mike Hellmuth, the painted aerials hold up just fine. If you remember, all the steel ladders were painted white for 300 years.
It’s a nice looking rig. They should’ve painted their bucket red like Orland did, gives it a little POP.
Crabby, they got away from putting the Q in the grill because everyone was going deaf.
Peter, I haven’t been to the Pierce plant in a few years but they used to have 2 or 3 women hand paint every American Flag on each grill. So each one was slightly different. Not sure if they still do it that way.

Lisle only has 2 frontline yellow apparatus left, Engine 52 and Squad 53, both of which are being replaced with 2022 Pierce Enforcers that were ordered a month or so ago. Once they arrive, Lisle will have one of the newest fleets in the area.

Wow, that is great shot and the new rig really stands out. I see that they are apparently no longer going to be using yellow fire Engines. I wonder if the are repainting their Yellow apparatus, red or if they will just change over as they get new rigs?

Rich S. Not impressed with your observation of LW’s new rig. How many compartments do you need. One side can be all extrication equipment and the other side minimal amount of hose, nozzles and adapters. This is not an engine company. Do you think more compartments are better, why, to overload the weight load of the rig, so you can destroy the rear springs every 2 years, or screw up the TAC system. Or do you want maybe 4 small compartments so the crew can put their brown paper lunch bags in them. What do you care what brand they bought, LW has been using Pierce for years, if they like them thats their business. Personally I think most departments over load the rigs and keep stuffing more feces into them. I come from a very busy dept, One of my duties was apparatus and equipment. All of my engines wound up with an extra 1 and a half compartments, because we put only items needed to run an Engine. My truck Companies almost have 2 extra compartments, nice cabinet to put groceries in, and they all have extrication equipment, TRT, confine space gear. Only put items your gonna need. If your truck needs more compartments, then move the equipment to another vehicle. and convince your village, town, fire district or city to buy another vehicle for the gear, more manpower and salaries, Dream

rich with most apparatus being give or take the same general price why do they keep buying pierce if they dont like them there are other builders out there i am very sure there are more people that would say they prefer pierce over anyone on this board asks most cheifs and while chicago may not buy pierce again but a new mayor may change that

Hey Rich, May want to take a closer look. The truck was layout with considerable forethought by the members. The ladders are plentiful and accessible off the rear. Highlights include two 35s. Compartments are adequate and functionally laid out. From my experience, it does not matter how much space you put on a truck someone will try to overfill it.

I like the American flag on the front.

I wonder how long all these painted ladders will hold up before showing age like chipping etc Is that special paint?
#14 by Rich S. on February 22, 2022 - 9:35 AM
Not impressed not enough compartment space or ground ladders for my truck liking. Departments just have to have a Pierce though.

Nice and sharp. A bit of a return to the traditional Q in the nose on some of these.
