LF runs with a staffing level of 8. 3 at Station 2 and 5 at station 1 including the Battalion. Their truck remains unstaffed (former Knollwood T-44) Station 2 is a jump with an engine and ambulance (former Knollwood E-44) Station 1 has a 2 man squad and 2 man ambulance and a battalion. The truck would be staffed by a callback crew for in town fires, or all of station 1 jumps to the truck for mutual aid fires. RJ, to your comment about consolidation and how HP and Libertyville and Lake Forest have no problem absorbing calls, you are wrong. LF runs anywhere from 8-16 calls a day usually with multiple ambulance calls simultaneously. HP time after time has to respond from the far south side to Highwood for ambulance calls which is not okay. That doesn’t count the number of times Deerfield A19 is the first in ambulance to calls in Highwood, or 3 mutual aid companies running a call to Highwood with no HP companies at all. Get your facts straight. Closing the Highwood FD was a big mistake, and any HP fireman will tell you it is too much, as one made that clear at the Rockland fire protection board meeting in discussion of closing Knollwood and how it was a bad idea.

harry, yes it is a 1991. I knew that and considering your habit for putting on information many consider questionable, I wanted to see if you would actually fact check it. And you did exactly that, so thank you for checking. The rescue – 5251 – is a 1991 Lance, purchased from Cedarburg. The department also has a 1993 Lance pumper-tender with another loud Detroit Diesel you’d like.

matt g actually me and u are wrong about the year I had found out about the year of the rig from a ff at Bristol but he was too wrong so I messaged the son of the mechanic at Bristol and he asked his dad and it is a 1991 pierce but either way it is a great rig thought

harry the Bristol squad is a little bit older than a ’94; it is an ’89. Definitely has the old Detroit engine.

This truck has had a silver spoon life as far as trucks are concerned…. a good buy for a municipal reserve or vol dept. Highwood is one sq mi, knollwood fpd was similiar. They ran 500ish/900ish calls annually and fully half were auto and/or mutual aid. HP, LF and LBVL have no problem absorbing their call volume. These are good examples of consolidation

I don’t know how recent the photo is but the rig certainly looks good. That reminds me of Skokie’s spare truck which was Tower Ladder 16’s 1995 Pierce.
So I assume the former Knollwood E-One quint is the new Truck 421? Is it staffed as a jump company? To my understanding there are only 10 people on duty between both Lake Forest stations which includes the battalion chief. That would mean there are only four at Station 2 and five at Station 1 plus the battalion. So how does Truck 421 get staffed? Do the two from the ambulance jump to the truck on fire runs? Does the 5th person at Station 1 drive the truck to the scene? Do paid-on-call people staff it at a fire?
Since the Highwood and Knollwood fire departments were disbanded, that puts more responsibility on Lake Forest which I understand also is supposed to supply truck coverage on some of Highland Park’s alarms. Truck 33 is usually unmanned and since Highwood was disbanded they no longer have the Highwood quint to supply truck coverage to Highland Park.
Lake Forest doesn’t seam much better off if you consider that there are not more than five on duty at Station 1. Most likely the engine or ambulance would have to go out of service if they were running with the truck unless there is only a driver assigned to it.
Someone on this site must have better information on how Lake Forest runs their truck.

Yeah some of those old DETROIT rigs were so loud they didn’t need sirens and could be heard many blocks away.
They produced more power per cubic inch than 4 cycle diesels. Older 4 cycles were often heavy and ran rough. These newer 4 cycle diesels are very much improved in terms of more power per cubic inches, use less fuel, and are much more smooth running. My other big interest is buses. Many bus operators were skeptical when DETROIT was going to phase out the old 2 stroke.
But these CUMMINS and DETROIT 4 strokes have been well accepted and they have gobs of torque so they run at lower rpm’s hence less noise. Take a ride on a J4500 and you’ll see how quite they are.

also more rigs that come to mind that have this Detroit diesel or similar type sound engine is
lake forest sqd 91 pierce if they still have it
Lincolnwood il 89 pierce engine
oakbrook terrace tower
Winfield il 1989 -91 pierce engine
Skokie 96 eone engine ex Wilmette
to name a few more I am sure I am missing a lot I know out east there are thousands of old fd rigs still active that sound like this because a lot of depts. in massachuusetts have a lot of 60-90 rigs and Massachusetts is a very wealthy state but towns keep the rigs instead of spending money

crabby Milton the only depts. that come to mind that have a vehicles with this type of motor would be
I believe pk ridge old 1996 pierce engine
niles il engine 2r 92 pierce
Rosemont old eone engine and tower
Bristol wi 94 pierce rescue was b4 cedarburg wi
cedarburg tower 88 pierce still in service
schiller pk 93-95 pierce
that is to name a few and I really miss the sound of these rigs heck I was in Bristol wi the other day and the rescue left pw and 4 blocks away I heard the Detroit diesel and something unique about the Bristol wi fd is that they have 8 plow trucks in there fleet

Not too many rigs that have the old 2 cycle DETROIT engines anymore. Very distinct sound that many of you young people out there may not have heard. Looks like a nice clean rig for being almost 30 years old.

that is a good solid truck and she sound good too perhaps the only 91 they may still have is the rescue it will be interesting if they go Peterbilt for ambulances now that lake forest is buying petes for pw
