Excerpts from nbcchicago.com:

Evanston firefighters rushed to a home around 5 a.m. in the 1300 block of Oakton Street, where they found the three-story building in flames. The fire had started on the top floor of the building.

Firefighters struggled to make entry on the top floor and were forced to enter through the back of the building, though they noted that the fire was extinguished quickly.

A 65-year-old man was pulled from the building and taken to St. Francis Hospital, where he was listed in critical condition. Later, Evanston fire officials reported the man had died.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
