Evergreen Park should’ve bought Orland’s snorkel for 50k, paint the roof black, update the lighting and call it a day. It has everything they would use it for and for alot less money for a rig that is not first due and does alot of mutual aid runs.
As for Frankfort and their issues with their snorkel, it is the first rig from a new builder of that item so there will be issues at first. Don’t forget how long it took Chicago to get there current rigs from Rosenbauer.

The order was approved by the board on Monday so going to be a while.

When will Evergreen Park Fire Department’s new Snorkel arrive?
#4 by Brian on November 10, 2017 - 1:55 PM
I understand that, just hard to swallow a 600+k brand new piece of apparatus not being first out. Which it won’t with the engine and truck unless they are going to change their response structure once this piece arrives.

evergreen doesnt need a pump on it. they have 3 engines, also oak lawn and Hometown are auto aid with engines

Good for EP!!! That will be a sharp rig. Nice to see articulating platforms (can’t call the Rosey a snorkel! LOL!) being kept in service.
#7 by Brian on November 9, 2017 - 1:28 PM
FYI, Evergreen Park is WEST of Chicago
The flaw I see in the purchase is not having a pump on the rig. If they see the need for the articulating boom, at least put a pump and small tank on it and run it in a rescue pumper type scenario.

Mike what they are buying (articulating platform) is used all over the world. So is every department that owns one making a stupid investment? I highly doubt it. Just because you think it is a bad idea, doesn’t mean others think it is.

Calm down Mike. If something works then why change it?

Wouldn’t be cheaper to change the box cards? Evergreen Park should treat this rig the same way Chicago treated the original SS-3 – which I am sure it is named for because someone used to fan there 50 years ago – put it out of service! Any squad equipment it carries would probably fit into a light rescue truck. The number of tower ladders in the south suburbs would embarrass the FDNY and I find it hard to believe a small snorkel is necessary. They would be hard pressed to justify the cost on the merits. Mayors/city managers/council members should really take an interest in what apparatus the chief’s want to purchase and not just blindly give their approval. If they can’t find another used snorkel that they can get cheap, then let it go.
I have no doubt that new snorkel squad will displayed at the fire academy muster it’s first year in service. That says it all. I just hope they name the new one SS-1 because that is where I used to fan. Then they can tell the mayor they need a high pressure wagon to complete the “set”. How about a high pressure wagon or a flying squad? Why not purchase an air compressor truck or a small crane and paint it blue and white? Come on!

Bill,
Homer’s tower ladder has been oos a lot due to mechanical issues
#12 by Bill on November 9, 2017 - 12:12 AM
The snorkel was a very bad investment for Frankfort
Apparently the tower is sold
I guess more $ will be spent on a new rig I would imagine
Frankfort should buy homers tower ladder

What exactly was wrong with Frankfort’s Snorkel? Was it something mechanical?
#14 by Michael m on November 8, 2017 - 8:53 PM
Is Frankfort getting a Pierce Aerial ladder? Do they still have to tower out of service at station 5? I am guessing they regret buying the snorkel.

Was the snorkel returned under the lemon law from Frankfort?
#16 by MABAS 21 on November 8, 2017 - 12:03 PM
Evergreen Park has similar structures like Chicago, ie: bungalows and taxpayers. Like Matt stated, it is on box cards for MABAS Divisions 21 and 22 and has definitely shown it’s value. SS3 has gone to work multiple times in Blue Island and last fall at the Baracco’s restaurant fire in EP.

Evergreen Park is Chicago. I mean Chicago east.
Lot of Local 2 people work there. Rigs have to be black and red, gotta have a squad, and then some
#18 by Matt on November 8, 2017 - 7:56 AM
The EPFD uses the Snorkel company as its squad company and as a reserve aerial device for the ladder truck. The Squad also carries water rescue, technical rescue and other additional tools not on the ladder or the engine.
Finally, The current SS3 is on many run cards in the area and has seen a number of fires. It has gotten a lot of use in the decade where the bucket is put to use just like in the City.

Beautiful old SEAGRAVE there.
Yes, it’s a shame when a brand name is tarnished because of lousy quality. You have to look at the concept and principle and not the name.

That is awesome! I agree with Marty why does EP need a snorkel? Has Smeal only made one snorkel total? I thought they at least have built 4 or 5. What was the problem with their snorkel?
#21 by Marty Coyne on November 7, 2017 - 10:51 PM
Wow that is awesome why does evergreen park need a snorkel
#22 by Marty Coyne on November 7, 2017 - 10:45 PM
Lookd like Rosenbauer was the right choice. They’re picking up ACP-55 orders while Smeal’s snorkel brand is dead in the water with their only sale being returned under the lemon law.
