Is it true that spare Tower ladder (E251) is getting a new motor or getting sent for scrap

E -251 is being scrap I took the motor out of it and put it in 265

Either scrap it or sell it to a collector. I don’t have the fat money clip to buy and restore a vintage rig but many “lost causes” were saved over the years. Unfortunately, most people in city govt. don’t look at things thru sentimentality glasses.

Just don’t get the point in trying to rebuild a 30 year old rig. Why not just scrap it now? They should have an adequate number of spare tower ladders after the last purchase.
If they do rebuild it, will they have to add a crew cab? I’m assuming any grandfather clause would go away with a major refurbishment.

Prior to the last purchase, there weren’t enough spare tower ladders to go around. Tower ladders were forced to take on spare sticks instead. So the E-Ones going in service helped the spares, but they need the old ones to have enough to go around. Plus, while maybe not cost effective to rebuild pieces of a 30 yr old rig…it is cheaper than buying a new one…this is the government we are talking about here after all.

Well, when equipment is no longer usable, what do you suggest they do with it short of parking them behind a building and allowing trees to grow thru the rusting floorboards?

The city has no problem spending money on stuff then selling it for scrap

Is the last picture the old Tower 39?

The fact that Truck 51’s rebuilt Seagrave is not being used as a spare rig explains why it looks so good. Too bad that the CFD didn’t save any of the Auto Car or for that matter Mack Squads.Three of the original eight 1954 Auto Cars did last until 1969 where they served a very short time span as Flying Manpower Squads. Not more then a few months each.

The E is part of the shop number. The E indicates that the vehicle is a ladder or since the 1980’s, a tower ladder. When the city ran tillers, the tractor had a F number assigned and the trailer had the E number. The -251 indicates that it is the 251st aerial ladder truck or trailer purchased. Since Fleet handles maintenance, the “FD” has been added to indicate Fire Department. A indicates cars, B indicates chief vehicles (BC, DDC, OFI, EMS Field Officers etc.) C for ambulances, D for pumpers and G for special duty rigs (Squads, Haz-Mat, Most Special Operations).

How can it be cost effective to rebuild E-251? I don’t get it? Is the plan to strip E-250 for parts? Thanks in advance for any responses.

What does the E signify/stand for?

Fleet Guy….what condition was the old Truck 51 in ?? Is that now a reserve truck?
#15 by Mike on December 12, 2016 - 3:07 PM
Truck 51 is a memorial vehicle. It is not in service.

Also, the old 2 cycle DETROIT engines were once the “voice” of buses and fire apparatus coast to coast. Now all but gone but will still be around in reserve and collector circles.

They still look good. Sad to see lees and less FORD CROWN VICTORIA’s out there. Once the standard but hey, that car had a nice long production run.
