Excerpts from the ChicagoTribune.com:
A Homer Glen man and his friend are facing misdemeanor charges after taking an ambulance for a joyride April 26.
The vice president of Vandenberg Ambulance called police April 27 after a mechanic notified him that a sideview mirror on an ambulance was broken. He watched video surveillance showing two men stealing the ambulance, then returning it to the garage, [recognizing] one of the men as an employee, Weston Fabian.
Police questioned Fabian, who admitted taking the ambulance [for three minutes] after he and a friend, Mark Fletcher, watched the Blackhawks game at a bar and then visited two other bars.
Fabian told police that he asked Fletcher if he’d like to see an ambulance, and they went to the Vandenberg garage, where they took the ambulance and drove it around the block. But they struck the building, breaking the passenger side mirror, when backing it back into the garage.
Because Fabian immediately confessed, the owner of the ambulance company opted to show leniency and only pursue a misdemeanor charge, police said.

AS this involved a current ( AT THE TIME ) employee , there was full knowledge of accessing vehicle keys and security measures. Yes I have heard – this person NO LONGER is employed by that company. Just goes to show you exactly how well stupid, rears its ugly head when alcohol is involved . UGH !

I’m sadly suprised this doesn’t happen more often. We talked about this before that for some reason, they don’t have separate keys for the door and ingnition. Plus, that young man who likes to imopersonate cops and just walked in to the station and took a squad car, they better watch out for him and others like him.

It would appear stealing a ambulance is becoming quite the fashion , a intoxicated EMT stole a ambulance from a firm in Arlington Heights and got in a crash in Chicago , a woman stole a Arlington Heights FD ambulance from NWCH . Can’t wait till someone drives of with a piece of apparatus.
