Those shots of Truck 24 in front of quarters are great.
I can’t help but wonder if the CFD has any active plans to replace their quarters as it is the last of the “single Truck stations”.
The city or shall I say the Fire Departments consultant was talking about moving them in with Engine 120 in the late 1960’s however Engine 120’s quarters would also have to be replaced as well as to my understanding Engine 120 house couldn’t handle Truck 24’s rig.
In more recent years such as the mid 1980s the Chicago Fire Departments own research and planning department had done an “in house” study and had recommended building a new station at 115th and Emerald and relocating Truck 24 and an Engine from the “Central City” (such as Engine 103 for example”) with them. That study had also recommended that a new Station be built for Engine 93 and a new Truck company at 103rd and State street as well as a new station for Engine 75 and another new Truck company at 130th and Indiana avenue. Last but not least that study had also recommended that a new Station be built for Engine 97 and another new Truck company about 4 blocks north of Engine 97’s current quarters.
While the city is not about to build those 4 “proposed” new stations any time soon. It still would make sense to start making plans to build at least one or two of those proposed new stations so that Truck 24 and a few other companies on the far south side get new stations.
