The specification of tandem axles on a tiller is usually to increase braking effort and traction on the rigs then deal with axle loading where axle loading laws are applied to fire equipment. The Columbus, OH Division of Fire runs about 8 tillers and they are all tandem axle equipped and they have had Duplex/LTI, ALF/LTI and Pierce tillers in service over the past 15 years or so.

RJ I believe that was why they went with the dual axel. Weight and power. I think that the problems Niles had was mostly safety stuff like switches and micro switches. It seemed that truck 2 spent more of it’s life out of service for repairs then in service.

Why did Niles (and Eugene) go with dual drive axles? Was it to accommodate a heavy duty 105″ ladder as opposed to a medium duty? Were the problems related to the dual screws or other issues?

Eugene, OR had the other tandem axle tiller and had many problems with it as well.

Niles dual axle drive tiller is unique, the sellers listing states “a rare twin screw tiller.”

The Lincolnwood aerial was purchased in 1989 almost one year before the LFD was organized on January 1, 1990. Before going into service at the LFD it was a demo rig and toured around with Roger Coulter, former Chicago area Pierce rep. LFD took possession for training late November of 1989.

Niles ran the tiller til 2010, They bought the North Maine 75 ft quint in 2007 and used it as a dedicated spare because the tiller was OOS most of the time. They replaced the Tiller with the former Trotwood Ohio 100ft Pierce that was just a big POS as the Tiller they they bought off a website. Now that is being replaced by the new Truck

I wanna say Niles had that tractor up until about 2-3 years ago, at which point they bought that used hunk-o-junk from North Maine (I believe). Just recently took delivery of their brand-new truck to replace that.

How old is the old Lincolnwood Truck? Is that the truck that the Tower replaced?
