Local news briefs

Fatal house fire in Chicago 2-21-13. From the Chicago Tribune:

Fire officials say the fire broke out around 12:15 a.m. near the intersection of Waller Avenue and Iowa Street, and the upper floor of the building was engulfed by the time firefighters arrived.

“They had heavy fire on the second floor, heavy fire in the attic,” Deputy Fire Chief Don Hroma said. “The attic was totally involved.”

Witnesses said everyone in the house made it out except for Davidson. One person jumped out a window, they said. A man who suffered smoke inhalation was taken to West Suburban Medical Center in fair-to-serious condition, fire officials said.

Naperville firefighters rescue worker at Edwards Hospital. From the Daily Herald:

Naperville firefighters used a construction crane Wednesday morning to rescue a man who was injured while doing outside construction work on the roof of Edward Hospital.

The man, whose identity was not being released, was above the fourth floor of the west building about 8 a.m. when construction material fell on him and injured him, according to an Edward Hospital spokesman.

… Naperville Fire Department Bureau Chief Kevin Lyne said … firefighters climbed stairways and a construction ladder to get to the worker, then called for a specialized rescue team because of the limited access to the area.

That brought 10 additional firefighters to the scene at 801 S. Washington St. to work with the five who responded initially to bring the man to safety.
