I believe the Alf order they got was for engine 92 and tower 5. Tower 5 was totaled in a wreck, or someone wrecked their rig and was given tower 23’s rig and i don’t know 92’s story. As for Engine 23 this was i believe a demo they bought before they went completely Spartan. Alf kinda jumped the gun thinking they were getting in and built a total of 5 or 6 pumpers and in the end the city only bought 1. As far as I know the rigs held up well. Tower 5 and Engine 92 still have their rigs and Engine 23 got a new rig this year.

i always heard that they never got the others from ALF due do someone at city hall leaking bid information so the city threw out the bids and started over … cause i have a picture of all 5 additional rigs painted and unnumbered at ALF in PA from years ago

There is a lot of debate on this topic. There was a pending contract to be awarded for new engines for the CFD. The ALF Eagle that served as CFD E23 was purchased at the same time as the Freightliner/3D assigned to E92, as the Freightliner was to take care of an immediate need for a pumper while E23 was intended to be a demo to see if they liked the truck and its design. I was not aware that a contract was awarded to ALF, but the story I have heard is that ALF/3D kept building additional units beyond the demo and when the contract was awarded to Luverne, they were stuck with the balance. East Chicago purchased two as noted and have the same paint and details as a CFD rig, but East Chicago painted the doors with their logos. They must have like the rigs since they later bought two more pumpers on the Eagle chassis.

Why did Chicago not purchase the other two ALF rigs?
