its a pretty big station. the first page of units plus the command van and air mask truck are all inside the station for sure. I believe the 3 pickups and ATV are parked behind the station and the 3rd engine and light wagon are at their shops if i remember correctly.

How do they fit all that apparatus in that station?

ROB, we did a new pick up after the new service 40. its number is service42 it is replacing a now sold gmc pickup, it should be in service within a week or 2 just waiting on one more thing, its a plow and a service truck fully outfitted with lights and sirens, no special tools besides a plow for winter,

the new service 40 is a 2012 f-350 i believe
#6 by Matt on October 4, 2012 - 9:30 AM
The new Service 40 has been submitted to the webmaster for posting

The manning situation is this, for ambulance calls: 2 front line ambulance, 2 back up ambulance, 3 on frontline engine, 2 on truck and 1 shift commander.
In-town fire call: 1 on frontline ambulance (tags hydrant), 4 on engine, 4 on truck (2 from back up ambulance jump) and 1 shift commander.
The old service 40 is gone, we already took delivery of the new one.

Doe’s anyone know if EP is getting new apperatus this year or next year?
#9 by Tom on July 30, 2012 - 8:37 PM
That would be a waste of grant money. All because the “moonlighters” want it to be like the city.
#10 by Brian on July 30, 2012 - 5:16 PM
A grant to refurb SS3 was submitted but not approved in the last round of Fema grants

Something to be be said about how much they must value a piece of apparatus that’s nearing 40 years old.
Good stuff!

Bill, DH is correct with the daily manning. The truck also has an assigned crew of four because it is the automatic aid truck for the Eastern half of Oak Lawn and they are also the jump company with SS3 for Box Alarms. When EP has a working fire in town, the off duty callback personnel will respond with SS3 as a Squad Co. to the scene.
An interesting note, EP used to have an entire fleet of Pirsch apparatus when I was growing up as a kid, all chrome yellow. They ran with 3 custom engines, two trucks and a Ford L based hose wagon with LDH. EP’s current reserve, Engine 48, was their last Pirsch purchased and it was refurbished/repainted in 1989 when they started transitioning back to black over red. Bill Freidrich has their entire old apparatus fleet posted on his smugbug site, dgfd147, under Cook County South Rigs That Served.

Snorkel Squad 3’s numbering was influenced by the city and the fact that many members of the department have spent some time as firemen in Chicago. Same with 2-7-7. SS3 does see action as a reserve truck when T44 is down and does go as a squad on box cards when requested. In the old days, EPFD used to have two squads, one being a Pirsch conventional rescue pumper and the other being a mini pumper or high pressure truck.
Note that Light Wagon 45 carries its original number from when MABAs Div 21 was the old 1st District and EPFD was assigned the numbers between 30 and 50 for its apparatus. It was an open number in the sequence.
The new pickup will be posted when I get the photo. It should be a 2012 Ford as it was just delivered.

Thanks DH. That makes sense.

Bill,
As I understand it:
Engine w/3
Truck w/4 (2 jumpseats cover the backup ambo)
BC is 1
Frontline Ambo w/ 2

Keith I understand that Evergreen Park is supposed to always have at least 10 men on duty so that they can always run with an engine, truck, ambulance, and battalion chief. I was wondering how they run the 10th man?
For example does the 10th man run as a 4th man on the engine or truck, does he run with the battalion chief, or is he detailed to drive one other rig such as the air support unit? Thanks

10-12 on shift plus shift commander Murphy, and Kleinhouse. Usually it’s 15 if you count the chief staff. For structures they run a 5 man engine company, a 4 man truck company, and depending on shift they will put the fifth man on T44 and have a 2 man ambo and Murph respond in the buggy

Oh and the special units like as u mentioned in your comment (MABAS AIR 21) they are not staffed unless It calls for it on a MABAS Box Card same with the Fire Investigation unit 777 and CV 277 when they are specially dispatched to a scene they will be usually be manned by 2 guys either off the truck or engine company ..

Thanks Keith. As always, you are good with the info.

Martin- EP has replaced Service 40 with a brand new Ford pick up…not sure of the year/model specifics.
Mike- I don’t know if SS3 was respectfully numbered because someone from EP used to fan on the city one in the 60s. I can state that a lot of CFD members moonlight here thus the CFD influence on their vehicles, ie: Snorkel Squad 3, Command Van 2-7-7 & Light Wagon 45. SS3 generally serves as EP’s reserve truck but it is on multiple box cards in MABAS Divisions 21 & 22 because of it’s versatility.
#21 by DH on July 27, 2012 - 5:50 PM
Mike and Dan,
SS 3 is the reserve/second out truck in town for EP. There are many towns in MABAS 21 that have the snorkel on their card at the Box level or higher. There are towns outside of Div 21 that have it specified.
#22 by Dan on July 27, 2012 - 3:08 PM
Mike,
Can’t answer on whether it is used as a spare or not, but looking through some fire scene photos from the past few years, it seems to make an appearance in surrounding towns quite a bit. I want to say one town in particular has that specific apparatus on their mutual aid. I used to visit Evergreen from time to time but never got to see it in action.
#23 by Mike McAuliffe on July 27, 2012 - 1:18 PM
Am I correct in assuming that the snorkel is called Snorkel Squad 3 because someone used to fan on CFD SS-3 in the 1960’s?
Is it still used primarily as a spare truck?
I always thought it was interesting that Evergreen Park called their snorkel squad SS-3 (CFD influence) and Orland Park called their snorkel squad Rescue 1 (FDNY influence).
Thank you in advance for any responses.
#24 by Jim kelly on October 20, 2013 - 11:58 PM
It is Truck 44s spare rig and if Truck 44s is OOS SS3 will be assigned to the frontline rig until T44 is repaired . It is also due on any Full Stills in the town of EP and is on many MABAS box cards
#25 by Martin on July 27, 2012 - 12:12 PM
They might have sold Service 40. I’ve seen that pickup without the department’s name on it.
