The Bloomingdale Fire Protection District has taken delivery of their 2011 Pierce Velocity pumper tanker for Engine 5.
Bloomingdale is going to put this pumper/tanker into service as Engine 3. It is a 2011 Pierce on an Impel chassis with a 1,500-GPM pump, 2,000 gallons of water and 50 gallons of foam. Bill Friedrich photo

This is called an Engine because the brass doesn’t like the term tender. I bet things change when they get a new chief

This unit would be good to respond to auto and mutual aid calls for tankers in non-hydrant areas in DuPage, like what York Center, Roselle, Bartlett, Winfield, and West Chicago does.

I could see this being a very useful asset for the Keeneyville area, although if it was kept at Station 2, which as far as I know has not been manned for many years, it would be kind of a loss. I doubt they would do this, but since the current Eng 3 is housed there, I’m curious. It does seem a bit large to be a full time front line engine though.

Bloomingdale is still working out how to use this rig. Right now it is going to spend 6 months at station 1 front line and 6 months at station 3 front line to work out all the kinks during warranty period, after that it will be housed at station 1 where response guidelines are still being discussed. It will probably be staffed on a jump basis depending on area (hydrant/ non-hydrant) but nothing is 100% yet.

I find it hard to believe that this rig won’t be first out from whatever station it is in unless it is with the truck and is a jump company situation.

Poc is paid on call. It’s like if volunteers getting paid for coming in. They have off duty firefighters come in and that’s how they run. Oh btw I’m writing this at 3 so it may make no sense.

It is–and will remain Engine 3. It is replacing old Engine 3. However, it will likely be front-line for a year or so. Then it will become the POC response vehicle–which is currently Engine 5.

Beautiful piece of apparatus. Just confused about it’s number situation since both pics display Engine 3, are they changing it to Engine 5?
