The Northbrook Fire Department recently had work done to Engine 11, the 2007 Pierce Impel. When the engine returned, the front cab face had a different paint scheme. The ‘hood’ is no longer red as the white paint break of the roof was carried down lower to the grill.

Northbrook Engine 11 now has a slightly different paint scheme with the white extending onto the front of the cab below the windshield. Larry Shapiro photo

Yep I totally agree with that, Tom…nothing bothers me more when you can tell a department put more money into lights than the apparatus itself. Not a huge problem around here…but out on the east coast you see it a ton.

Hey, if it’s a company “making good” on other issues, I have no issue with that. Just when fire departments spend money on their “toys” without directly impacting the public safety aspect. (And again, not necessarily saying that’s the case here… just a general comment.)

I’ve heard (off the record) that this truck has been a bit of a lemon since they’ve gotten it. No MAJOR problems, just a lot of various problems rather frequently. So as has been said, it would not surprise me if this went in for other work and got new paint while it was there.

It’s not my taxes as I don’t live in Northbrook, but I can’t help but ask how this paint alteration really helps improve public safety?
Personally, if I saw my home department prioritizing these types of things with my tax dollars, I’d be a little upset.
As cool as fire apparatus is, some monies spent by departments are really silly. The truck is just 4 years old, so this should be a preventative-type thing. Many departments (generally speaking, not necessarily Northbrook) are crying money… and some do things like this.

editor’s note: apparently the engine went in for other work … and the paint change was done at the same time
