Firefighters battled a three-alarm fire on the 10th floor of a high-rise in Chicago’s Loop for several hours Thursday morning. The fire started about 4:05 a.m. on the 10th floor of a building in the first block of South Wabash Avenue.

The Chicago Fire Department responded to an extra-alarm fire near 119th Street and Avenue O in the Hegewisch neighborhood about 8:40 p.m. Wednesday. Flames and smoke could be seen from several blocks. The building was in an industrial area, and its roof appeared to be completely gone. There was a rekindle about 6:45 a.m. Thursday as more smoke could be seen coming from the demolished building.

A Chicago firefighter was taken to a hospital in good condition with a minor injury after battling a fire Saturday in Edgewater on the North Side. The still-and-box alarm fire was reported at a home in the 5600 block of North Winthrop Avenue was put out by 3:23 a.m.

A somber ceremony honored Mario Araujo, the first Chicago firefighter EMT to die from the coronavirus. His colleagues saluted, his family was honored as they and mourn a loss due to COVID-19 that thousands of others have endured in our state.
Inside the fire academy, Araujo’s mother and family watched his badge, number 5186, be enshrined in the building itself, his sacrifice honored. And it’s not just at the training academy. Araujo is now also honored along the lakefront at the firefighter EMT memorial for all to see. His name is now etched in brick alongside his fallen brother and sister firefighters, now forever part of the city he loved.

Firefighter/EMT Mario Araujo was honored today at the Quinn Fire Academy. FF Araujo was the first member of CFD to succumb to the deadly coronavirus in April. Mario’s service and dedication will always be remembered.

The opening of the Chicago Fire Department’s new $30 million firehouse in the West Pullman is being delayed because of two COVID outbreaks at the construction site. It will be the second largest fire station in the city, sometime after the new year.
Two Chicago firefighters in the CFD have died and 425 have tested positive for the coronavirus since the pandemic began. About 30 firefighters are now quarantined.
