Perhaps DARLEY would rather concentrate on smaller orders and supply pumps and not try to fill requirements for multiple apparatus purchases for a city like Chicago. Nothing at all against SPARTAN but that’s the chassis you would have to buy since DARLEY doesn’t build its own chassis.
Most departments want single source where the chassis and the rest of the unit is built by one builder.

i would choose Pierce over E-One every day. The custom work they do in Appleton building engines and the extra expertise and equipment made for them in their factories in nearby cities has no real competition throughout the world. They make every part to exacting standards themselves in their own buildings. The thing that I don’t understand is why we don’t see more Darley equipment being sold in America. Are they less expensive and more attractive to smaller venues with less money than more affluent cities and villages like Naperville or what? From the YouTube demos they look good. Their leadership is very community and fair minded. They have been around for many, many decades. They are based in near-by Itaska. Do chiefs, etc. just think they make inferior products? Just asking? By the way, I LOVE the return of the bell. And by the way, they can make a difference in snarled traffic. It’s a different sound that cuts through car radios, telephone conversations, and catches one’s attention if rung hard and several times.

I’m fairly confident the E-One will holdup much better than the Pierce. Pierce is an inferior product!

Speaking about having the luxury of being able to purchase, compare, and choose between different brands of engines, the Los Angeles City Fire Department purchased both Seagrave and Pierce pumpers at the same time in 2003, 2005, and 2006. During those years they ordered between 7 and 15 engines from each. The recession hit them hard however and they took about 11 engine companies and 7 trucks out of service. While a few of the engines were put back in service over the last 2 years, to this day none of trucks have gone back in service.
For a few years after the recession they ordered engines from KME, however last year they started ordering from Pierce again.
At times in the late 1960’s and 70’s the CFD ordered from more than one manufacturer during the same year however today that would be wishful thinking.

That’s impressive. Sharp and a nice touch with that bell.

Both rigs turned out nice! I agree it would be a tough decision on which company to go with. Good luck to both. If anyone knows if and when the official “wet downs” for these engines will be held, let us know.

Very cool rig. Its a tough problem to have, choosing which cool custom pumper will work better for the city. I bet most FD’s would love to have that issue. Good luck to both.
