This from Steve Redick:
Had a great opportunity to take a boat cruise through the locks and into the Chicago river and got some decent images of the 2 big fireboats at the dock … old 58 and newer Engine 2. The Wheatley has various shades of red and violet colort due to some kind of issue with the paint so it’s not your eyes.Steve

Being out in the environment 365 days a year takes a toll on paint; Waves and storms on the lake also take a toll . As to workmanship, the boat is floating and capable of pumping so it still works as intended. Sometimes need to trade the aesthetics for operation.
There are also now quarters in the Marine Safety Station as well.

Yes 58 is quarters for the crew. It’s also the spare when Eng 2 is OOS,

I have to agree Engine 2’s hull looks awful. It should be pulled out and re built. Isn’t it only a few years old. Poor craftsmanship. John

I believe the 58 is still around because 2 doesn’t have living quarters for the crew.

I’m surprised they still have Engine 58. I remember a memo going out years ago about it being placed OOS. Must still be in the spare pool.

It’s been like that for years. It’s still a fairly visible vehicle but the rest of the fleet is showing its age as well so I wouldn’t expect it to be fixed ant time soon.

I’m guessing it will get hauled out and repaired. It’s a shame…

What is going to happen with this paint job? This is a shame that this is happening on a custom engineered, multi million dollar, state of the art fire fighting/rescue water craft. If it was on land where more people see it this mess it WOULD be fixed pronto!
