54/53 go back and fourth with being busier, 54 has been busy the past year. 51/52 are the top 2 busiest due to 51 being all residential developments and some small businesses. 52 is all businesses with small residential coverage areas. 55 is probably the slowest fire house in Schaumburg due to having the smallest still district. and Joe, what exactly do you mean by “Engine 53 will soon be overtaken by Engine 51?”
#2 by Joe on November 15, 2016 - 8:33 AM
They seem to be handing down apparatus of late just as cmk420 said. Engine and ambulance 54 aren’t as busy, so they don’t have as much of a need for brand new apparatus apparently. Engine 53 is actually the newest engine right now but will soon be overtaken by engine 51. Engine 51 and 52 go back and forth as the busiest engines, followed by 53, then 54. Truck 52 is busier than truck 53. I’m not sure where squad 55 falls in there, but I think it’s middle of the pack. I know that squad 55a doesn’t see as much work, so as I said before the miles and hours are relatively low at this point. I guess it makes sense to hand down apparatus to get the most out of them toward the end of their life.

Cmk420 you are correct. In the past few years 51/52 were getting new apparatus and handing them down to 54 only. Current Ambulance 54 is the x Ambulance 51, and the current engine 54 is getting replaced by engine 51 when they get their rig. 53 hasn’t got any hand me downs, the received a new ambulance and engine and now receiving a new truck.

Correct me if I’m wrong, but I believe I read (somewhere) on this site, but isn’t Schaumburg doing some type of “hand-me-down” process, with regards to all their front-line engines and ambulances? It always seems like 51 and 52 get the newest vehicles, and the others get moved to 53 and 54. Again, I could be wrong.

Yes Joe you are correct if you didn’t see my last post I even mentioned I didn’t work there :). I accidentally mentioned it my bad haha. Eric: I can’t see 55A moving anytime soon due to it being the mabas apparatus I don’t think they will move it anywhere else. Ambulance 53 / 54 are next up getting new ambulances, engine 52 should be next year to early 2018 possibly.

Tyler does not work for Schaumburg. He shouldn’t refer to “we” when talking about Schaumburg because he does not work there. That said, I don’t work there either, just have several friends that do. That’s why I don’t refer to Schaumburg as “we.”
Engine 51’s replacement (Pierce Impel) is being speced out right now, it will be ordered soon. Squad 55’s replacement (Pierce Velocity) is being speced out right now, it will be ordered soon. New engine 51 will be delivered before new squad 55, but neither have a solid delivery date right now. Current squad 55 is getting up there in miles, has constant problems, and is in the shops far too often. The maintenance has gotten out of hand on it. Squad 55a isn’t used as often and therefore doesn’t have the miles, hours, or wear and tear that squad 55 has.
Engine 52 is tentatively scheduled to be replaced in the next budget year, so it may be ordered and in service as early as late 2017. That is, of course, tentative. As I mentioned before, Engine 51 and 52 have a similar amount of miles and hours. As a possible point of interest, ambulance 54 (ex ambulance 51) should be replaced relatively soon, possibly at the same time as engine 52.

Tyler any chance Squad 55A goes away and they just use squad 55 that you say 55A wont get replaced?
#8 by Tyler Tobolt on November 13, 2016 - 10:44 PM
I personally don’t know why they are replacing Squad 55. Lots of miles on it I can tell you that, but not 100% sure. Squad 55A will stay sitting at 55 for who knows how long that won’t get replaced.

Why are they replacing squad 55 than??
#10 by Tyler Tobolt on November 13, 2016 - 9:22 PM
Not anytime soon, Engine 51 is next up. Maybe next year.
#11 by Sebastian on November 13, 2016 - 8:52 PM
Are there plans to replace engine 52?
#12 by Tyler Tobolt on November 13, 2016 - 8:41 PM
I don’t, I’m an explorer there and I have family there on the job.
#13 by Sebastian on November 13, 2016 - 7:59 PM

MABAS 21, according to friends who work for Schaumburg, the switch from E-One to Pierce was largely driven by fleet services. They were growing dissatisfied with the overall quality of the E-One rigs.
The Pierce Impel engines have held up well and both engine 51 and 52 (identical 2008 Pierce Impel) are rapidly approaching 100,000 miles. They’re not without their problems just as with any other fire apparatus, but they’ve been free of major issues and defects. Any time apparatus get heavier work the way they do in Schaumburg, there are bound to be small issues that pop up. The design of the new truck 53 is largely the same as truck 52 with a few notable exceptions in changes to the cab. As I understand it, the new engine 51 will have a cab that’s similar to truck 53’s, but there won’t be many other changes to the rest of the rig.

Thank you Joe for the information. I didn’t realize that their the call volume was so high.

MABAS 21, they are doing very well. Love the rigs, they sometimes have problems but overall very good rigs.

I am surprised though that they didn’t stick with E-One for the tower ladder since they have a better jack spread and other better features opposed to Pierce. Still a sharp looking tower!

Schaumburg will have a pretty sharp looking fleet after this and the other new engine is delivered and placed in service. Does anyone know how their new Impel/Velocity apparatus are holding up compared to the E-Ones?

Aidan, the current Truck 53 will go to reserve status and the current reserve truck (old truck 52) will be sold.

What will happen with the E-One tower ladder that Truck 53 currently uses and the E-One truck that is a spare that Truck 52 used

That’s a beautiful rig and unlike many suburban tower ladders and trucks these days has no pump or water on board so it can’t be used as a quint if needed.
