This from Mark J. Gaunky, Deputy Fire Marshal, Mundelein Fire Department:
The former Sugar Grove tower was delivered last week. We hope to have it in-service within a month as we are expecting our new engine about that same time. We do have a few offers on the 1995 aerial, unsure where that will be going at this time.

Thanks Sam, as it would only make sense that the Ambo Crews would be used to assist the fire companies if they did have a serious working fire as 2 man Engine and Quint crews are very limited in what they can do if they have a serious structure fire. I don’t know if Libertyville or Countryside (Vernon Hills) does better then having 2 man crews but like you pointed out is almost a necessity that at least one of their companies respond on automatic aide to Mundelein just to have an adequate amount of manpower on a working fire.

It will replace the current Truck 431. Although, I’m not on the department, this is just what I see and hear from the scanner and I also live in Mundelein so I know a lot about them. Engine 431 is the 2003 Pierce Saber Pumper, the photos have it mislabeled. Also, when Truck 431 responds, Quint 432 usually also responds when they get fires. Also, I’m not sure if they ever responded with more than two man crews, although they have been doing it for some years now. Also, if they do get a fire, sometimes lets say if it is in Engine 431’s district, then Ambulance 431 crew will jump on the engine as well. Although this doesn’t happen a lot. The paramedics will usually act as third and fourth FF’s on the engine if it is a working fire usually.

Thanks for the reply Sam. So it looks like the Tower Ladder will most likely replace the current Truck 431 correct? I take it that Engine 431 is 2003 Pierce Saber Pumper/Squad? The photos on this site seem to be either mislabeled or out of date as the 2003 Pierce Pumper/Squad is labeled as Engine 432.
When station 1 responds with Truck 431 does station 2 still respond with Quint 432 or does station 2 then respond with Engine 432?
Did Mundelein ever respond with more then the standard 2 man crews (at one time) such as with either 3 or 4 man companies? I suppose that they have the paramedics on the current Ambulances 431 and 432 act as the third and fourth fire fighters with their Engines or Quints if it turns out to be a genuine working fire that they respond to correct?

Bill,
They run with two FF’s on Engine 431 which is the primary unit out of station 1 and then two on Ambulance 431 out of station 1. Station 2 is two FF’s on Quint 432 and two on Ambulance 432. They also have a battalion chief always on shift. This truck, Truck 431, is a reserve, although they sometimes will get calls and they respond on the truck instead of the engine. But, not too frequently do they do this.
For a structure fire response, it is usually the following: Engine 431 (or sometimes they take the truck), Ambulance 431, Ambulance 432, Quint 432, Battalion 43, and then an auto aid engine or quint from Countryside or Libertyville.

How are the companies manned in Mundelein as both stations have an engine and a truck company and I’m sure that not every apparatus is constantly manned?
Is it that if there is a structure fire or what Chicago calls a still alarm that the first-due station runs with the engine and the second due station takes their truck to the fire? What about that squad company at Station 1, are they run as an engine company as it is really a pumper/squad?
I would imagine that most of the aerial trucks in town would probably either run as jump companies or reserve units. Thanks

Rich
Formerly Sugar Grove basically because anticipated development didn’t work out and manpower. My phones not letting me post the link but if you search the site for Sugar Grove there is more info about selling surplus apparatus.

“we are in the process of purchasing the old Sugar Grove tower ladder. It is currently in Harrisburg PA, where they are giving it the once over and making some minor repairs, new tires, etc. It will be delivered via semi-truck sometime this month.” Not sure where you get Appleton from? since its not a new truck..

Why is it former sugar grove? Now Mundelein? Somebody make any make mistake

They want to keep it as new as possible since they opted to deliver it via flatbed instead of driving it from Appleton.
