It appears that the site is inaccurate for Highland Park Station 34, which lists Engine 34 housed there.

Thanks for the additional information Rob. What I was attempting to say was that Highland Park was running with 2 man Engines since at least the late 80s and I was hoping by now that they would have increased their manning per company , especially since Engine 31 was taken out of service when they opened the new Station 33.

All I know is the manpower is poor. In 34 still when they get a fire call they receive auto aid with Highwood with
A37 T37, Normally it is 2 Engines, Amb, Bat or Squad on the call depending on the still area, off Lake Cook Rd Deerfield Truck 20 comes in auto aid as well.

Rob according to the Highland Park Fire Department Organizational Chart in January 2012 there were 15 personnel listed for one shift and the other two shifts had 16 people list for each shift which didn’t include the three Battalion Chiefs.
Based on two men per Engine/Squad that would give you four men at Station 2 and four men at Station 4 and two men at Station 3 plus the Battalion Chief. That would give you about 10 men per shift not including the Battalion Chief. Now I know that one man per shift should be considered a “fill in” positon for people on sick leave or vacation but that should give you about 11 men per shift.
Has the manpower per shift been further reduced since January 2012 or is it that I have the numbers wrong as to the station assignments?
What is normally dispatched on a reported structure fire
in Highland Park and who does the “Truck work” when you have a fire in town?
Was the manpower per company reduced recently?
I remember seeing an accident response in Highland Park in the late 80’s when there were 4 stations in Highland Park and at the time there were two men on Engine 33 and only one man on the old Squad 33 which in those days was medium sized walk around box and wasn’t a pumper squad like they are today.
Did they ever increase manning per Engine since then and now reduce it again? I had assumed that they might have increased the manning per Engine since they closed down Station 1 and moved Station 3 further east.
With 15 men per shift that would still give you 3 men per engine/squad and 2 men per ambulance which would be 13 and would still give you at least one or two fill ins (floaters). With 16 men per shift that would allow you to run with 2 men on the Truck and still have a floater left.
Unless they had increased the manning and reduce it again you really can’t go below 2 men per Engine and a 2 man Engine is bad enough.

The rigs got moved around due to staffing. The squad and their truck, which I think is out of service, due to manning used to be at 33’s and the engines are 32’s and 34’s. they run their rigs with 2 per rig and the city has been cutting manpower for years.

The Squad and Engine had been exchanged for about a year or more. I don’t know why it was done but I understand that Engine 33 does have extrication equipment but not as much as the Squad does. I sure that someone can probably give us more information on it.

Is there different equipment on this rig compared to an engine in the same town?

The rig is indeed lettered Squad 34. When I was driving through there yesterday, Engine 33 (and not Squad 33) was back running out of Sta. 33, so I think HIPK just switched the 33/34 apparatus…..

Bill,
I think I see “Engine Co. 34” as well, I can’t be sure due to the size of the picture.

No it has always said squad it used to be squad 33 then got moved to st 34

Highland Park MAY be using it as a squad or simply calling it a squad , BUT that doesnt change the accuracy of the picture on the website. OAK LAWN Fire Dept has their squad company in a rig that says Engine on it just the same – that still doesnt make the picture incorrect !

I realize sometimes my eyes are not the clearest , BUT I BELIEVE THAT Apparatus HAS the phrase ENGINE CO. 34 on the Front AND Side of the Cab. ANYONE ELSE see this?????
