Entry-Level Firefighter/Paramedic | City of Bloomington, Illinois
The Bloomington Fire Department is organized and operates under a paramilitary model, with a unified chain of command and clear delegation of authority. The department’s authorized strength is 123 sworn personnel, consisting of one Fire Chief, three Deputy Chiefs (Operations, Administration/EMS, and Training), four Battalion Chiefs, two Assistant Training Officers, one Public Information Officer, 24 Captains, 28 Engineers, and 60 Firefighters or Firefighter/Paramedics. Among these ranks, six members also serve as Fire Investigators while maintaining their primary rank. Non-sworn positions within the department include an Office Manager, an EMS Billing Manager, two Support Staff, a Data Analyst, and a Maintenance Coordinator, who support the department’s administrative, operational, and technical functions.
Operational personnel work 24-hour shifts followed by 72 hours off. In 2024, the Bloomington Fire Department responded to over 14,000 calls for service out of 5 active fire stations.

The Administration, Training Division, Public Information Officer, and all support staff work a 40-hour week, Monday through Friday, from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
