This from Eric Haak:
At 1830 hrs Friday evening, companies in the Chicago Fire Department’s 23rd Battalion responded to the 8000 block of South Marquette on a still alarm. Arriving companies reported they had a fire in the rear of a 24×50, 2-story ordinary. Still engines were 72, 46, and 126. Still trucks were Truck 49 and Tower Ladder 34. Engine 126 was on a rubbish nearby and that was the reason for the 3-engine response. Engine’s 126 and 72 (in a spare rig) both worked in sector 1 on Marquette as well as the tower ladder. Box time was 1837 hrs as the 23rd reported heavy fire in the rear porches and through the attic. I could see a header from 95th and Halsted at that time. At 1841 hrs the roof collapsed bringing a Mayday response along with a 2-11 and an EMS Plan I. Within 2 minutes, 72, 126, Truck 49 and Tower 34 had all taken a PAR and all members were accounted for. The Mayday was secured shortly after. As you view the pictures, keep in mind that this building had a pitch roof with attic dormers which were no longer visible once I arrived. I was at 95th and Ashland when the still was given and it took me a half hour to get to the incident.
