Deputy Chief Daniel Osman retired from the Aurora Fire Department July 26 after more than 27 years of service.
Osman worked as a paramedic for the majority of his career and also served on the Local 99 Union Board. He led the department’s participation in the annual food and toy drives and took part in many community events.
Seven people were promoted following Osman’s retirement. Assistant Chief of Operations Kevin Nickel is now serving as deputy fire chief, effective July 27. Nickel, who has worked at the fire department since 2001, was unanimously sworn into the role July 23 by city council members.
Nickel was appointed to lieutenant in 2016, captain in 2020, battalion chief in 2021, and assistant chief of operations in 2022. He served as a paramedic and rescue diver for most of his career and held several positions on the Local 99 Union Board, including past president.
The following six Aurora Fire Department staff were also promoted:
- Assistant Chief of Support Services Matthew Anslow to assistant chief of operations
- Battalion Chief Michael Kaufman to assistant chief of support services
- Captain Phillip Bergeron to battalion chief
- Lieutenant Daniel Bateman to captain
- Private March Bachleda to lieutenant
- Private Andrew Smith to lieutenant
