Bear in mind all the gaps are edited out, there was a long delay in alarms initially (5-Alarm fire and 3-Alarm EMS Alarm in the North Maine FPD, 9-16-18)

I imagine many of you have never heard this recording before. The west side was up for grabs the night the Bulls won the first time. Tower 14 was chased by a mob in a car, companies reported bricks and bottles thrown at them, rampant looting, and a heck of a fire at Madison and Pulaski. Listen in and appreciate what these guys went through and how the media gave little or no coverage to what really occurred that night.

This was a very nasty job. Some voices I recognize, the buggy driver was Ed Doocy, in the office I heard Bob Phelan, Phil McMahon and Al Anderson. I believe I took this one in from home.

Another classic recording from my archive. The largest in a series of arson fires in this area, mainly started on back porches and in garages. This was very typical of the fire activity in the city then. Some voices I recognize: Eddie Karas as 477, Dan Mahoney, Art Benker, and Jeff Rodrigues in the office. I made this recording on my old voice activated recorder back then and was 2 years away from starting my career in the office. This is some great stuff … give a listenSteve

Not sure of the date on this one. Carl Brauneis gave the still out and I think I heard my old boss Jack Turner and maybe Tom Shevlin as well so I’m thinking mid to late 1970s. This is NOT the big one on October 30, 1970

Some more classic CFD radio. Warren Jonas was the call taker and yours truly gave out the still on the amplifier. Joe Pavlik was on the radio in the office. I think the 7th battalion was Mike Hughes. 2-11 3607 Fullerton. Nothing unusual about this but just a good old typical extra alarm.

Another item from Jim Regan’s archive. This fire occurred on a bitter cold night and resulted in the death of FF Kelvin Anderson of Engine 107. His body was recovered several hours after the height of the fire. I uploaded some images I took at this fire
From fsi.illinois.edu:
On December 22, 1989, Chicago Fire Department Firefighter Kelvin Anderson of Engine 107, died in the line of duty when the roof collapsed on him during a fire at the Rose of Sharon Church on W. Warren Boulevard. Anderson’s colleagues reported that he was crawling through the church searching for victims when the roof collapsed around 7 p.m. Search and rescue teams labored for more than sixteen hours before Anderson’s body, buried under debris in the church’s basement, was recovered around 11 a.m. the next morning. An autopsy indicated that he had died from asphyxiation and severe burns. Anderson was given full department honors during his funeral, and a plaque in his memory was unveiled at Engine 107’s firehouse in 2001.
