John – No doubt, aluminum corrodes too but nothing like the steel wheels and I know exactly what you’re talking about with the inner dual corroded to the hub! Some think I’m crazy but I actually like a steel inner dual for that purpose. Then when the steel wheel rusts out, replace with a new and you don’t have to worry if the paint matches or not.

Mike, aluminum wheels corrode too, especially up north here. You haven’t lived until you’ve tried to get an aluminum inner dual off that’s galvanic corroded to the hub and drum…….but with the cheap paint they put on steel wheels now, they rust in a year.

I think it would be neat if they brought back the cast spoke type with the demountable rims. Some thought they were ugly and I doubt they’ll come back but they were neat and one look and you know they meant business.

I think for the most part the steel verses aluminum discussion boils down to personal preference. I’ve replaced a lot of steel wheels throughout my career due to corrosion but in the south this problem isn’t as common. I suppose if you like black wheel and aluminum, Alcoa now offers black aluminum wheels. They look pretty sharp.

I suppose there is much truth to that. However aside from shine, those examples of braking and slightly better MPG won’t make that much difference to offset the cost when the rig is going to be stationary in between quick and short trips. Just my 2.25 cents.

Aluminum rims are better for the brakes and tires because they cool off faster. And although minimal, they weigh less and a tad better on MPG.

By the time the steel wheels are painted to customers specified color I don’t think there is much if any cost savings to steel wheels. I personally like the aluminum wheels better. The steel wheels rust and corrode over time and often need to be replaced. I think the lifespan of an aluminum wheel in a midwest climate is longer.

Another great example of not needing expensive aluminum wheels to look sharp. Great color combo too.
