Mid mounts are ok if you don’t mind giving up 20 feet of the front and 30 feet off the back, if you’re forced to back in or nose in. I can remember one setup, in particular. Only building access was a short drive on the side. Had to back down in front of the engine. Never could have reached the building with a mid mount.

MABAS 21, Tower 24 he wrecked the bucket on their tower at least once, always goes through many spares, and totaled the last working HME tower ladder (E280). With how much money, time, and headaches they are causing, I also wouldn’t be suprised if they are sentenced to being a Truck company again.

Moe, you could give some Chicago truck companies a rig with a 5 foot clearance and they’d still find a way to hit something. I think Truck 24’s days as a tower ladder are numbered (or should be,) and if they aren’t that’s a failure of CFD leadership not to make it happen.

I’m always surprised when depts order raised roof cabs with mid mount aerials. It reduces the scrub area over the cab quite abit. Even FDNY does it. Gaotta remember to swing cab away from the fire side of the street to give boom/ladder the clearance it will need. Othrwise i’m a fan of the midmount units. Low center of gravity and travel height (Chicago southside tower co.s) and usually a shorter wheel base.

Mike C. I think they’re more popular now because people are open to the idea of change. They like any other piece of equipment has a place and will work in certain areas. No kore front and rear overhang anymore. Spotting it is easy because the turntable is right behind you. I also don’t think they were pushed much by sales and manufacturers at least in this area

Why are mid-mounts such a big hit the past few years. For decades, mid-mounts were criticized. I never thought the mid-mounts were as versatile as rear mounts.
