Well DETROIT DIESEL has gone proprietary a few years ago. Therefore since DETROIT is part of the DAIMLER empire, you can only get it in a DAIMLER owned sister product. In North America that would be FREIGHTLER trucks, THOMAS buses and that new MERCEDES BENZ TOURRIDER bus. DAIMLER doesn’t own any American fire apparatus builder so that isn’t going to change.

Whatever happened to the Pierce partnership with Detroit? That was a pretty nice option. I would rather have the DD13 over an X12 any day. But, yes, having a different option is always nice.

The Paccar engine was, not sure if it still is, less expensive than a comparable Cummins.

For all the faults that PIERCE has in regards to quality problems and stonewalling warranty claims, at least they offer an optional engine.
For the record, I’m a decades long CUMMINS stockholder so naturally I’m not overjoyed at them selecting PACCAR but competition is never a bad thing to keep everyone on their toes.

I second the comment about Cummins. Availability and service is much greater with them.

Paccar makes a good motor, but I don’t think I would ever opt for it if it cost more than a Cummins. I’m not sure I would say the Cummins is much if any better in reliability or quality, I’ve always had great support from Cummins where Paccar’s tech support and parts inventory isn’t as plentiful.
