LFD 543, as long as they work well, who cares what they look like? Does aesthetically pleasing really matter? Good lord!

Maywood just bought one too. It’s posted on Legacy’s FB page

I have always thought that Sutphen apparatus were ugly. They simply are not very aesthetically appealing to me.

I’m with Jeff on the black out stuff. Whatever the cost, it’s not worth it in most circumstances. The only area that I like the black out is on the front bumper so on those summer days, when you sit on the front bumper it doesn’t burn your ass. FDNY has their roofs with Linex on them. I guess if you have high rises in your area, it might be a nice feature to have. This was added on the the FDNY rigs after 9/11 since many firefighters were crushed to death when the roof of the cab caved in.

The black out package is much easier to maintain. No polish, no annual deep cleaning really. And anecdotally speaking, it holds up really nice even with minimal upkeep. And as far as night time visibility goes, there’s plenty of other features you can put on to make sure you can see it.

Congrats to BenBrown and the Legacy crew on another sale. Solid guys with good products.

So how much are departments paying for black out packages? How do they justify the cost? It doesn’t enhance safety in any way (makes the apparatus harder to see in day and night) and doesn’t improve the operational efficiency of the unit. It can’t be cheap. Is it being done because people think its “cool” or “bad ass”? Fine if you want to spend funds on your own vehicle, but these are taxpayer funds – most taxpayers don’t want to pay for a Chief’s version of bad ass. And if it is much more than a few thousand dollars (which I would imagine it is) those funds should be spent elsewhere. Convince me it’s not a waste of funds – it can’t be justified.

Yes,
Cary has 2 engines, 1 tower and a squad that are sutphens.
Wheeling has a 2016 Rosenbauer/Cobra Tower Ladder

Cary is all Sutphen too. Sutphen maintains a good family name and reputation. I think my only complain with the Sutphen is they seem a little more difficult getting in/out of them. Maybe it’s just my old age. I would be happy to see more Sutphens in the Chicagoland area.
Does Wheeling still have that Sutphen midmount tower still?
