Excerpts from the patch.com:
Scott Pilafas, who worked as a Clarendon Hills paramedic for 19 years, submitted his resignation April 10. He singled out Fire Chief Brian Leahy for criticism.
“The current leadership in the department has made it unbearable to work,” Pilafas said. “The Chief places value on local department members with minimal experience while undervaluing Firefighter/Paramedics who are needed for the majority of calls… This continues to create a toxic divide in the department.”
In his resignation letter, Pilafas said he was vocal about the fire department not replacing the ladder truck. Leahy and other department leaders strongly favored buying a truck, despite the village manager’s reservations.
“It’s hard to work for leadership that doesn’t respect paramedics and has never had to be a paramedic or walk in our shoes,” Pilafas said in the letter. “You can add me to the list of the over 70 Paramedics that have come through the door in the past 19 years.”
As with all paramedics and firefighters in Clarendon Hills, Pilafas was part time. He is a full-time Chicago firefighter.
Pilafas said the fire department is buying a new ambulance, but may have no one to staff it. He said these staffing problems have occurred while the fire department put its emphasis on a new ladder truck.
In March, Chief Leahy said the village needed paramedics, but said the fire department could cover its ambulance shifts.
Leahy did not return messages for comment left on Monday and Thursday.
thanks Martin

Scott is 100 percent on point with everything stated. Clarendon Hills can’t staff their own rigs. The surrounding towns are and have always been a crutch for them. I guess the only good thing coming out of them waisting $ on all these new rigs will benefit Hinsdale FD when they take them over eventually. It’s a toxic environment over at the Hills and the leadership is lacking beyond belief. Like I have said in numerous articles posted regarding this issue. Towns are happy to help when a dept is busy but it’s not their job to cover when they can’t even staff their own equipment. It’s time for someone to finally step up and just take them over so the residents get what they deserve.

Retired, you obviously forgot that part of the constructive discourse in the fire service is (or was,) ball busting and criticism. And it also used to be (supposedly) forbidden for a union firefighter to work a side job as a non-union firefighter. Guess that has fallen by the wayside, too. I’m sure there are plenty of part time, non-union suburbs that would be willing to hire the gentleman on based upon his skills, so he can tell them how to run their department.

I am so tired of the petty back and forth bickering that goes on here. Read the comments and move on. Children can behave better than the adults on this site. Everyone has an opinion, right, wrong, or indifferent, there is no reason for the back-and-forth attacks on guys. Do I agree with everyone on here, no, but I find no reason to argue with them. We can do better. That is all.

For a guy that can’t seem to stay on a company (71 to 88 to 127…) he sure has a lot to say about residential firefighting.

Right, because at the last report written in 2015, they had 5 structure fires in the entire year so they have to have a ladder truck??

Ok Harry! What is “agothey?” Does “should ordered” or “that a” make sense? My speculation is, that you have never been in the fire service. Please stop your ridiculous comments, thoughts and suggestions! You have no credibility whatsoever!

what would have been smart is when ch bought the new rescue a few years agothey should ordered that a rescue engine and now if they feel replacing the ladder makes sense then get a new ladder and keep the current engine as a reserve
