Good question. The advantage of going generic is that there’s more freedom to get the best deal by not being obligated to one builder. On the other hand, standardization saves time and hassle of having to train everybody when an apparatus from a different builder comes in. I guess it depends on many factors most the size of the department.

So the question now is did they even consider looking at the products of some other fire apparatus manufacturers or did they just automatically go back to Pierce? I was wondering that maybe Pierce was offering them a deal or some kind of a discount or an incentive due to their problems with their current Truck 51? At least if they looked at some other manufacturers and their products then it can be said that they felt that they were getting a good deal.

Crabby – We share the same thought and I really hope it serves them well for 20 – 25 years. I really do want Pierce apparatus to serve the end user well. If it wasn’t for Pierce or some other low quality builder, I would not have near as much work. The fact of the matter is, I honestly feel bad for some of these departments who buy apparatus then get stuck with a shortened lifespan due to corrosion or stuck with massive maintenance or repair bills which is all too common with brand P.

Is this truck going to be on a single or tandem axle chassis?

PIERCE may have given them the usual “But this time we really really fixed it this time. We’re not kidding. Don’t laugh at us come on now. We really corrected it…
I hope for the the tax payers and the department it works out and lasts for over 25 years but history shows that PIERCE doesn’t think they have competition so time will tell.

After all the problems they had with pierce itself and the current truck and they still went back to them. That truck is less then 15 years old and is well taken care of and the frame and torque box are still Swiss cheese. Some people never learn.
