John: I can assure you that the “modern” diesel still produces plenty of soot, but the DPF filter is what cleans it up. And yes, the DEF situation is another cost (minimal) but it is a cost. Thankfully, modern electronics help greatly. I left the fire service 6 years ago and have noticed that many departments have chose gasoline engines now in place of diesel ambulances….so what is old is new again. But there is a learning curve with diesel emission management that a fleet manager might not have the time or interest in dealing with. We shall see where the EV situation heads to…..I have my educated guess.

Crabbymilton you are correct that the Diesel engine of today is much better and can last longer than ever before. I also have to say that DEF for my opinion is garbage. For everyone who doesn’t know DEF’s main ingredient is Urea forgive the spelling is the most disgusting part of new Diesel engine. I believe it comes from the bladders of Pigs. They use the urine to control the soot at the tailpipe. I feel that the engine is clean running and doesn’t need this product. When I used it it was a very corrosive and do not get it on you or the ground. I will still say Electric Fire Apparatus is not going to do well in our current situation in the country. The Green new Deal people don’t understand the Fire Service they just want to push their agenda on the people. The Taxpayers want and demand reliable cost effective vehicles. I don’t think anyone in this platform would be against this ideal. Maybe Electric busses or mail cars but not Fire Apparatus. I would not want to be the one to tell a family that the first due Fire Truck was unable to respond and the second and third were coming from farther away. And by the way “Sorry for Loss of your family member”. I mean everything fails now and again, things aren’t built like they used to be. I remember not to long ago that the Pierce rigs would have to be turned off to reboot the computer so the rig would go into pump mode. Tell that to the Firefighter on the line in a burning building. Just saying.

Can you imagine the proprietary parts these rigs require? Proprietary parts means extra expensive to repair/maintain!

Tim – Look in the exhaust pipe on any diesel truck that’s within 10 years old (that hasn’t been modified). The pipe has no soot or carbon at all! They burn extremely clean!

Mike C. you’re right. We, as a country tend to slice our own throats in the name of green. The newer diesels are so clean the rumor is air coming out is cleaner than the air that went in.

I have the same opinion, Crabby. The green initiative is not necessarily green or environmentally friendly or American friendly by any means.

Well Mike C. what you say is based on logic and common sense so therefore it’s not to be implemented. Doesn’t matter how clean and quiet diesel engines are now, your always going to have the same people that think that they’re the same old loud and smelly engines of decades ago never mind the cost and lack of charging capability. They are driven by emotion rather than logic.
BTW, loud and smoky diesels never bothered me being that I have been a bus and fire truck nut for almost all of 57 + years.

Michael m – I guess I really haven’t seen much for improvements with the electric vehicles over the past few years. In any case, our infrastructure can’t sustain all these electric vehicles, many fire stations can’t sustain one electrical vehicle charging at a time let along multiple emergency vehicles.
Diesel vehicle exhaust is so clean why not stick with what’s proven and more cost effective?

Now that you mention that ROSENBAUER, it looks like it could be a doppelganger to those old GERSTANSLAGER command posts. Yes, at least PIERCE and E-ONE are using existing platforms for this.

Electric vehicles have come a long way since Chevy introduced the Volt. Hopefully as time goes on, they will become more economical to operate.
Hopefully the technology will get better to address the weight issue.
At least the Pierce and REV Groups rigs look like rigs we are use to seeing here in the states. Rosenbauer’s rig is too European looking. If they want to sell a lot of them stateside. Hopefully they will consider making it look more like a normal US fire engine.

Thanks Mike C perhaps I’ll keep that in mind in the future. You are exactly on target with the BEV movement creeping into fire apparatus. At a long drawn out scene, you’ll need that diesel engine to keep it charged to run that pump and keep the lights going. A hybrid would have been a much better alternative but they seemed to bypass that in favor of 100% electric…whoops they have that small diesel as an auxiliary source. So for now this is all symbolic so that’s one of the perks Mike. That’s their way of telling the world that they care even though it’s not going to work as well as it does on paper. BEV may be fine for some vehicles but emergency not so much. Besides, these new diesels are much more clean and quieter than decades ago.

Crabby – The general public can attend. Anyone can get a pass.
In other terms, electric fire apparatus is a major step backwards.
– Lithium Ion battery disposal is horrible for the environment.
– Our electrical infrastructure can’t sustain a large volume of electrical vehicle charges.
– Many fire stations can’t sustain this electrical load to charge 1 or even more pieces of fire apparatus. 480V 3 Phase and minimum 50amp depending on what charger is being used. Some chargers draw over 200 amps!
– Even with current record high diesel prices, it’s significantly more expensive per mile to run electric apparatus than diesel apparatus. It’s very expensive to charge electric vehicles including fire apparatus.
– The initial cost of electric fire apparatus is insane. Electric fire apparatus is by no means cost effective. Rosenbauer’s electric fire engine is approximately $1.5 million for an engine like the LAFD.
– The “electric” fire apparatus still has a diesel engine.
– Many of the major components for the electric fire engines is made overseas where the major components of diesel fire apparatus is made right in America.
– Fire apparatus is already very heavy. Electric fire apparatus is even heavier!
Maybe someone on here can help me understand the perks of electric fire apparatus. I’m not seeing the perks!

Affordability will come as more departments go with this technology. Plus, the manufacturers want to get this product out so they’ll make it affordable. It is the future of fire apparatus just as gas replaced the horses.

Very interesting show Pierce, Vectorv(REV)and Rosenbauer electric fire apparatus displays I believe affordability by many depts will prevent them from going this direction………..
