Thanks for that good information Dave. Apparently Naperville is trying to keep its Fire Department Maintenance budget down as those one man “Rescues” are being used for low priority calls. And they also apparently feel that their New Squad 9 can do most of the work that Tower Ladder 9 used to do or at least they are hoping for that. Even a few of their Ambulances are only on duty during their busier daylight hours. So they are also trying to keep their operating costs down. They are obviously on a very tight budget.
As far as the midmounted Tower Ladder goes that has been ordered by Skokie it is probably going to Truck 18 as Truck 18 is the Older of their two in service Truck companies and Truck also doesn’t have pump on it while Tower Ladder 16 does. That is also a surprise to me as well because now Skokie apparently will be running with 2 Frontline Tower Ladders and also 2 different vehicle types.
Even though this is not quite directly on the subject of this posting. It would be great if the Chicago Fire Deparment could also order a Mid Mounted Tower Ladder from Emergency One so it could go in service at Truck 34 which would then go back to being “Tower Ladder 34”. According to the story they took the Tower Ladder out of service from Truck 34 not only to give it to Truck 24 but because Tower Ladder 34 was having accidents with lower height viaducts in its district. With a Mid Mounted Tower Ladder the height of the Viaducts will no longer be as much of an issue. Tower Ladder 34 was in service for over 32 years as a Tower Ladder and ironically it had only become a real issue over the last several years that they were inservice at Engine 72’s house.

Bill, I think Naperville’s “Rescue’s” are EMS first responder vehicles. Elmhurst and Roselle are two other departments in DuPage Co. that have the “Rescue’s” as first responder vehicles.

Bill,
Just to answer some of your questions:
The Rescues are manned by a single person, and respond to elevator alarms without voice contact, carbon monoxide alarms without reported illness, other non-emergency calls (assist citizens with other detector issues, etc) in order to not dispatch a suppression company. They’re also attached to any fire, extrication, etc, as additional manpower.
They are only manned when manning is above minimum, but when there isn’t enough manpower for an additional medic company, or all medics are up (rare).
“VR1/2” as an abbreviation is used to keep the vehicle at the bottom of the CAD screen, essentially… They’re not referred to as “vehicle rescues”.

Speaking of ordering Pierce.
Skokie has ordered a Pierce Enforcer 100ft Ascendant MM Tower Ladder with no pump or tank. I’m surprised they went with a MM.

Speaking of Naperville and it variety of makes and models of Apparatus I notice that they have also been changing around the types and amount of the apparatus that they have been using . All of a sudden they have reduced their Truck companies from 3 to only 2 and in reality they have reduced their Truck company’s by 50% because not that long ago they were running with at least 4 Truck company’s. If I recall correctly there also was a Truck or Tower Ladder 5 that had ben in service. They also now have 2 as opposed to 1 Pumper/Squads in service. I also noticed that they have 2 units called Vehicle Rescues. What are they for. Aren’t the Squads used for Extrications? I would normally assume that a Vehicle Rescue unit would be a rig that carries Jaws and Spreaders and possibly airbags for Vehicle extrications however with 2 Squads in service isn’t that redundant ? Even their Truck company reduction and the locations of their Truck companies are now pretty spread out. Truck company 1 is on the East End of Town and Truck company 10 is on the Far South West End of Town and there is no Truck that is in the Middle of Town. When Station 9 was opened it was unusual at it was opened as a single Truck house with out an Engine company and the Truck had been relocated from Station 7 which appeared to be the Main or Headquarters Station. Now Tower 9 is out of service replaced by a Pumper Squad. For a fire department as large as Naperville’s which is probably the largest suburban fire department in the Chicago Area to reduce their Truck companies by 50% is a pretty large reduction.

The Spartans they have now weren’t part of the REV group back then.

SUTPHEN too. But then again, SPARTAN and E-ONE are both part of REV anyway so at some point I guess you can all it one in the same.

Don’t forget to throw the Spartans in there.

Interesting they went with Pierce. They are going to have a mixed fleet for sure! By my count Engine 4, Tower 10 and Ladder 1 are or will be Pierceās plus this engine.
