I thought I have read that most of rust issues that PIERCE has/had were between 2003-2007 years. Hopefully they have been corrected but PIERCE has demonstrated that they thought nothing of stonewalling and jerking around longtime customers over this. Hence, builders like SEAGRAVE and SUTPHEN are all to happy to fill an order that could have been PIERCE’s. Time will tell if PIERCE will or has gotten it’s collective act together.

Michael m, the new engine was delivered a couple weeks ago and is in service at station 3. E3 went to station 4 and E4 went to reserve

Are they also getting a new engine with this tower? If they are getting a new engine, which one will it replace? Engine 3 or 4?

I just want to celebrate any dept. getting a new rig in this economy and this unit looks really sharp. Anything with an 888 on it is a good start to me. Capt Mike can fill us in on how well it works after its in service.

Good morning Harry,
Can you help me understand how aerial failure on several Chicagoland Pierce aerials pertain to the way the apparatus was specd? This doesn’t seem like an accurate statement but I’m open to hear your thoughts.
On another note, this tower is beautiful! My buddy on Lockport mentioned that the board promoted the Pierce apparatus for many years despite many issues. Eventually the mechanics said, enough is enough. Lockport was all Pierce before and had significant problems with them for many years. The rear mount tower failure was the icing on the cake. That was a beautiful tower and as Mike C mentioned, it was literally biodegradable. The corrosion was really sad to see.

mike c well mike c u have your opinion but all in all there are many depts in cold climates that have no issues with pierce and while u may be an evt but that does not mean you think you know everything

Hairy, you have no idea what you’re talking about. The corrosion and rust issues that the other Mike listed have nothing to do with the spec. Every time you post on here you show your ignorance. Have you ever considered viewing this site and watching from afar?

mike maybe it is how there spec. because i know the asst cheif at waukesha wi which is a decent sized wi city about 80 000 people running 5 station and my asst cheif friend there said that the eones rust just as bad but yet there oldest frontline pierce is 5 yo and has no issues and they have 2 2008 pierces in reserves that no no frame issues also wi does not use as much salt as illinois

Harry that’s wonderful news for Skokie. Carpentersville tower ladder was less then 20 years old and rusted out, Hoffman estates tower ladder a little over 20 and rusted out, Lincolnshire riverwoods a little over 10 years and rusted out. There are a lot more in the area that rusted out. If Skokie wants to take that risk and spend a lot money on garbage then I guess that’s on them. Why has pierce been the only manufacturer to get sued over rusting out frames, ladders and torque boxes?

mike c for instance skokie has a fleet of mostly new pierces and none of them have had issues

This Seagrave tower is replacing a biodegradable Pierce that failed at an early age. I’m not sure what Lockport did with the old Pierce but it was basically worthless.

Nice to see that the use steel has not been downplayed in favor of aluminum so often.
