Excerpts from Fox32Chicago.com:
A truck carrying 14,000 chickens broke down in the heat and Addison firefighters’ quick thinking saved many of the birds by hosing them down saving thousands of them. After the truck broke down along I-90, the went to a nearby mechanics shop where the chickens were cooled.
Sadly, the fire department estimates that up to 1,000 chickens did not make it. They are egg hens, so the alternative for those that did make it is not horrible.
From the Addison Fire Protection District Facebook page:
Never the same day twice…AFPD is on the scene of a broken down semi full of chickens. The chickens are dying in the heat. Crews are using water and fans to keep them alive until they can be off loaded. #AddisonFPD

Well, some of the thousand that didn’t make might have ended up in a fire station’s stew pot.

Whatever your thoughts on this. I think its great the Fire Department was able to help out. It shows how versatile they are and how much they are needed in every community.

Yes DH I learned a long time ago about the different grades of chickens. Fryers, roasting and stewing. Perhaps an oversight on my part but they aren’t going to be raised for someone pet. Hey we all can’t be perfect.?

Crabby, sure, it was a joke. However, you’ve proven before you don’t fully read stories before commenting…and for a guy in Wisconsin, you sure don’t know how farms work…there’s egg hens who lay eggs that get taken and we eat them…then there’s meat birds that are raised for food…two different birds. There’s many more differences, but I’ll save the farming lesson…

Oh for crying out loud DH lighten up. The eggs will hatch into chickens and they may end up in a bucket with mashed potatoes and gravy. Besides, the hens will end up as some sort of food product like soap stock. Hot days like this everyone gets so snippy.
